Upcoming from TRG

Posted By: Brooke Wheeler on Wednesday, October 18, 2000 11:53:45 AM

I emailed TRG yesterday to find out if they have plans to release a color-capable PDA in the near future. Here's what I got in response:

There is a new PDA from TRG Products coming out early 2001. Unfortunately, all I can tell you is that it is not color. The screen will not display colors. It will be a very improved high contrast screen.
In other TRG news, they released BackupPro today, which allows users to backup databases and apps to the Palm's non-volatile Flash memory. It supports devices by Palm, IBM, Symbol, and TRG and OS 3.0 through 3.5. It is available now for $9.95.

 Does improved mean bigger ???
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/18/2000 9:15:52 PM #

What are the chances of TRG doing the right thing and increasing the size of the screen from the current crappy 160x160 and piss-off the grafiti area ?

Unfortunately, the 160 x 160 size limit is built into the Palm OS. No OEM can make a larger screen until Palm re-writes the OS to support them. Rumor has it that Palm is doing this now and that OS 4 will support screens of different resolutions, but that's just a rumor. And a hope.

 What many of us want

I don't want a colour screen- I like my battery life the way it is.

If TRG improves the screen resolution they have my sale. My perfect palm would be a Vx with expandability and a better screen (though not colour)

I have nothing against colour per se, but the technology is not ready yet- the current size and power costs are too high for me.

 Palm Screen Resolution

I seem to remember reading an article about a year ago, regarding a new palm device. This had a hi-res screen, and the graffiti aea was a floating window which could be hidden when not required.
Pity this device never left the drawing board.
Surely Palm could do something similar? 160 by,say, 240 would be an improvement. New software would take advantage of the extra space (as well as the fact tha the graffiti area could be turned on and off). Old software would use 160 by 160 res, and would not let you turn off the graffiti area in order to maintain compatibility.
Not the perfect solution but surely a step forward?

 Battery Life A non-issue

I dont understand your concerns about battery life. I have the IIIc and its never been an issue at all. I use it all the time (power user), I program with it using PocketC for 2 hours at a time and I overclock it which uses up the battery quicker.
I purchased the car adapter to ensure power at all times (I only needed it once)
I found myself far less concerned with battery life with my IIIc than my old Personal. With the recharable its not a concern at all.
