Handspring Loses Ground in PDA Market

Posted By: Ed on Monday, November 13, 2000 9:54:08 AM

Market research firm NPD Intelect has released figures ranking the PDA market by dollars sold in September, the most recent month that numbers are available for. Palm was first, of course, with 68.8% of the market and Handspring was second with 11.2%. In August Handspring had 15.5% of the PDA market so it experienced a significant drop. Back in July, Handspring enjoyed 26.1% of the market. These rankings do not take into account the release of the Visor Platinum and Prism, which happened in October, so it is possible Handspring will see a big rebound.

In August, Palm had 70.3% of the market so it dropped 1.5% but the company is still much higher than the 61.5% it had in July.

The PocketPC continued to slowly gain ground. In August, the top three PPC makers had 9.7% of the PDA market while in September they jumped up to 13.5%. Interestingly, NEC sales are equal to Compaq's, despite all the attention Compaq's iPaq has been getting.

It wouldn't surprise me if the attentina to the iPaq actually ends up helping all PDA sales and not necessarly Compaq in particular.
