Liberty 1.2 *speed deamon* out

Liberty 1.2 is now available, and as promised it provides you with dramatic speed increases (30-70%) through a complete rewrite of the screen handling code [we had to do it] and there is also limited support for sound! You can now play your favourite games with the bleeps and blops you have all been asking for :)) Please take our word for it when we suggest you disable any music that is played in the background (its kinda annoying).. it is also possible now to configure your games (grayscale, color, config) on a game by game basis! It should have been there since day 1, but - its there now, so you don't need to keep asking for it!

Not Quite there, but getting better

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/15/2000 5:59:12 PM #
Well, downloaded it. Still quite slow and most games are unplayable without the hack. I don't like hacks, I've had many bad experiences in the past with them in the past (Prior to buying backup buddy, today it's less of an issue for me). Perhaps using this emulator with the recommended hack may work in a more playable fashion. As far as programming feats are concerned, it's VERY impressive. But for someone who plays games, you may not be as impressed if you are expecting fast-acount gaming.

I'll keep checking future versions though. No doubt that as new devices become more powerful (Perhaps using the StrongArm chipset- or whatever it will be), this emulator speed issue will be a thing of the past. Once this happens, I'll be registering it. Until then...

Thanks for the hard work on this great idea!

Jon

Works OK for me
PFloyd @ 11/16/2000 1:04:56 AM #
But then I've never used a GameBoy. I'm using a Vx at 26 MHz and the couple of games I've tried worked well. BTW, the InstallBuddy add-in to automatically convert Gameboy files is pretty neat. Along with Beaming files within Liberty I think it's a cool setup.
I'm really hoping one of these complainers (and I mean that in the best way possible) would go out and buy a Visor Prism and let us all know if they like Liberty on that unit.

Even better.. I'd wish someone would put Liberty in the form of a springboard module, that would allow it to actually take the real Gameboy cartridge...Just seems very logical to do...and would not limit so many people to find pirated, I mean legal copies of games on the net... Because I personally think its a joke to buy the hardware which goes between $60 to $120 (that is if youcan actually find a place in the US that will sell it) to put the games in a file format that can be sent to the Palm...

its on the drawing board - we are working / seeking springboard manufacturors for this. the ideal solution would be to provide an external CPU / speaker on the spring board so that we can handle sound and provide full speed gameplay - while at the same time plugging the cart into the back of the device. a springboard module with these capabilities would sell :)

Oh yeah, Now that would be cool. I would pay for this :-)

Drawing board??
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/17/2000 12:04:22 PM #
Even though this may be on the drawing board....Do you really think it may become a reality?? If so... any speculation as tooo when.. this year??? Next?? The year after??? Software publication and creation is one thing...But hardware engineering and manufacturing is a whole different situation... It would sound as though this would need a lot of finacial resources to even make it a remote possibility?

yes, it is *in* the works. you'll just have to wait for rest of the information.

i thought "I.M. Anonymous" people didn't like the software? why would you like the hardware adapter? and, this hardware adapter would only be suited for Handspring devices - would you make the switch just for this?

as i tried to explain earlier, we use any proceeds from the software to aid future development or provide support that users need. we dont invisage a "profit" from such an application - any payments are returned to the user with new features and future expansion.

my other games are free - guess why?

Ok, are you guys the same ones who posted all the negative comments when the emulator was announced last year? It sounds like the same "it can't be done" stuff to me. Well, you ate your words once, didn't you?

Not quite there, but still pretty good!

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/15/2000 6:50:11 PM #
I thought 1.0 and 1.1 was meaningless since even at 32 mhz virtually all games were unplayable on my Vx. But now I can _almost_ play my all time (all platforms) fav game - Tennis from -89! It still needs to be about 10-20% faster, although the hardware key-layout of the palm is now a bigger concern and I can't blame Gambit for that...
Good work! Svenskar kodar bäst.

It seems that Liberty alwayz crashed on me when i load up to my Visor

interesting :) you see, when people register, they provide money not only for our efforts, but they ensure that we have the ability to purchase all devices that are relevent to ensure the successful testing of our products.

i just pulled out my Visor Deluxe from my drawer (with the other 14 Palm Computing Platform devices) and installed a fresh set of batteries and installed Liberty. overclocked the baby to a nice speed, and wola.. no problems at all.

maybe you should provide more details of what you "did" when you installed Liberty? did you remove the previous version before installing? did you test the overclocking capabilities of the device? just saying "it crashed my visor" doesn't give us much to work from.

Liberty also runs on the Visor Prism and Platinum devices (yes, we tested these devices), something that PalmBoy is not capable of doing right now.

And let nots forget to mention that Liberty *can* run games that are > 512Kb (ie: *all* the Pokemon games) which PalmBoy also does not support and also that Liberty provides a vast array of configuration options and a well presented (professional) user interface. You pay for what you get - end of story.

If you personally prefer PalmBoy, thats fine with us :) however, in future, report any problems you are having directly to us, and we may be able to offer you a solution before you make yourself look stupid by saying "it doesn't work".

I'll tell you what really looks stupid... That's listening to you tell everyone here what they need to do to get this poor excuse of a program to work on a handheld device which nativly will not perform at any acceptable level, that is without overclocking anyway. Oh and I guess everyone should just keep a set of fresh batteries around handy so they can use this cheaply written program.... Here is some advice to YOU!!.. If you're gonna write a program that wont work acceptably with a Palm out of the box..than try switching to writing your programs for the WidowsCE.. At least most of the CE community has come to expect flakie and unstable software. Next by telling users to over clock their Palms just to use your dumb software you are placing every user to use their Palms in a manner which Palm does not support and if anything were to happen could void their warranty. Third this is a message board for EVERYONE to post their opinion, whether good or bad towards your product..So grow up and chill a little... Not everone has tolike your program here.. or give you detailed reasons on trouble shooting as to why your program didn't have to work.. That is why you have your own website and email for..not here..
And I'll tell you what.. I am greatful that I saved my money and used the crack floating around to see if your program was worth it..

Enjoy :-)

"I.M. Anonymous" posting = ignored by most people, if you want to say something, why not put your real name behind it - but like i said earlier, we are not forcing you to use the software. if you dont like it, dont use it. even better, why not write your own emulator that does not require overclocking? this project was a "can it be done project?", nothing more.

Ha! You expect ME to pay $17 dollars for a program that promotes illegal activities? Anyway, if you made your little emulator thing go about 5 to 10 times faster than it goes now I MAY consider buying, though now I own a Game Boy advance (Got a prototype from Japan through my contacts..) If you can get your emulator to those levels than I owuld DEFINATELY buy it, and if you made it free, I'd download it. But to pay $17 for it? A LARGE WASTE OF MONEY!

Platinum?

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/16/2000 9:09:19 AM #
Will it work fine on a Visor Platinum (33Mhz Processor)?

RE: Platinum?
ardiri @ 11/16/2000 9:50:14 AM #
Will it work fine on a Visor Platinum (33Mhz Processor)?

yep :)) we have been good boys and try not to hack into the devices so much to make them dependent on existing hardware :)) at the moment, you cannot use an overclocking utility on these devices (afterburner may be updated soon)? :P the software will pretty much survive any device upgrade (unless it is a different screen size - we will fix this "hack" later, when we need to)

if you download "nowaitz", you can get an extra boost :)) Liberty runs fine on the Prism (and you can tweak the colors) and the Platinum devices..

Great effort, BUT

Carl Brooks @ 11/17/2000 12:08:48 AM #
I applaud the efforts of the makers of Liberty. I think they are really doing a great job;however, I don't really support the idea of the end product. Bleem allows for the Sega Dreamcast to emulate the Sony Playstation One games better than they would be on the Sony system. Trying to get the Game Boy (B&W) games to work on the Palm device is like trying to get Intellivision games to play on the Sony Playstation 2 system: the effort is great for nostogia and that is all. My kids love the Game Boy unit and its games, I do not share the same joy for it. I think the games are unfitting for the Palm devices. While I applaud the the efforts of the Liberty team, I would rather see their energy focused on making Palm games like Zap2000 or Road Rally. These games make good use of the Palm OS and the desire of the kids in all of us.
RE: Great effort, BUT
ardiri @ 11/17/2000 6:19:56 AM #
Liberty is a hobby project, rest assured - most of our efforts are going elsewhere :)) We add a feature/ or fix problems when they are needed - but its not our main focus. :) Expect to see more from us (other applications - games etc) soon.

Hey Anonymous

Dave @ 11/17/2000 9:16:37 PM #
1.) Step up and write a program as cool as Liberty or shut up. You've said what you thought, please spare us anything else on the subject. Learn this: everyone hates know-it-alls.
2.) If you don't like Palm, please buy a Pocket PC and spare us your bitching. Maybe if you buy an iPaq you'll stop posting on this or other Palm forums.
3.) Palm is doing well and producing units that, by your own stats, 80% of buyers want. The folks at Palm are getting it done. Oh, that's right, you bought an original Palm Pilot, they should kiss your butt, right?
4.) F.O.

Other Projects?

PRS @ 11/20/2000 1:49:20 PM #
I love the new version of Liberty,
many games including Dr Mario run at full speed and it seems all of the graphics problems have been sorted, now I can see MegaMan!

Could we have some hints about any other projects you are working on?

RE: Other Projects?
maven @ 11/20/2000 10:28:22 PM #
Thanks for the nice words :-)

We can't say too much about our next projects (non-disclosure and all), but I think they will be worth the wait!

I will tell you, we keep improving Liberty in our spare time, and you can expect even more speed improvemnts and other enhancements in the next few months.

Regards,
Maven
