Internet World Wireless Wrap-up

The first Internet World Wireless 2001 was this week and it didn't get much news coverage because no important announcements were made at it. Alan Kessler, Palm's COO gave a nice speech (which is available in Real format) on Palm's wireless plans but none of it was new. He basically rehashed information that had been covered at PalmSource and the Consumer Electronics Show.

The conference was almost certainly hobbled by being scheduled at the same time at the 3GSM World Congress in France. Palm and Handspring didn't even have booths at this show. Microsoft did but none of its liscencees were in attendance.

But the wireless ISP were there in force. OmniSky and GoAmerica had big booths. The cellular telephone companies like Verizon and Sprint also had a presence.

Pretty Weak Show, Actually...

I'd call it the Internet World Wireless flea market - the show was very small and there were a lot of "me, too" companies. Lots of "services" firms (read: consulting and contracting companies, or body shops in the vulgar tongue).

Ho-Hum

Someone's gotta plan these things a little more carefully. Having them too close results in the same stuff getting rehashed, that's all.

Actually, this could have been a good showcase for the smaller companies. Pity.
