Digital Voice Recorder/MP3 Player with Palm Connectivity

Posted By: Dave on Tuesday, April 10, 2001 7:36:09 AM

The Vianix SASO Digital Voice and Audio Management System is marketed as a digital voice recorder that also plays MP3s. It has 16MB of internal memory and holds 40+ hrs of voice recordings (8 hrs in built-in memory, 32+hrs on SD/MMC card).

It fits together with a Palm III, V, and VII through specially-designed adaptors. Once attached, users can immediately access SASO information through the Palm and even manage and transfer audio files. Tiger Direct is selling the SASO for $400 and the Palm adapters for $40-$50

According to the company, it has "near CD sound quality" that is good enough to do speech to text conversion.

SASO’s internal memory allows for up to 15 minutes of MP3 playback internally and over an hour with each stamp-sized 64MB external memory card. It supports MP3, WAV and MASC.

It is 2.5 x 3.7 x .8 inches and weighs 3.2 oz with batteries. It has a jack for a microphone and one for stereo headphones, too.

It is possible to do a HotSync via a serial cable without removing the Palm from the adaptor and supports Windows 95/98/2000 and NT.

Other features:

  • Filing system allows for organizing audio files into 512 folders with 64 subfolders or personal play lists
  • Index point marking anywhere in the file for instant recall
  • Cut, paste, and overwrite functions
  • Backlit graphic LCD display for file viewing
  • Audio alarms to playback messages when SASO is on or off
  • Battery status check

$450 for audio on my Palm?!?!?! No thanks. I'll just have to stick to humming my favorite tunes for now!

I find that the Kodak mc3 (http://www.kodak.com/US/en/corp/store/catalog/Category.jhtml?CATID=7943) is just about perfect. It's a 640x480 digital camera, it's an MP3 player, and it uses CF cards, which I can also use with my TRGpro. Prices range from $199 without any CF cards to $349 with a 96MB CF card.

Hello there,

I am very interested in getting a voice recorder to use with any palm. What do you recomend? I need about an hour recording per day for my medical practice.

I appreciate your time.

Thanks
Frank

This thing blows away all other voice recorders. The audio quality is noticeably better - a huge plus for anyone who has experienced fadeouts and weak signals, or who hates turning the volume way up to play back a meeting while hearing the voice at the far end of the table. Works well with the Palm, and seems forward compatible, too. Very small package. Overall, excellent.
