What Happened to Developers' Nation?

Posted By: Ed on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 11:23:01 PM

Developers' Nation, the third party website that offers support services for Palm OS developers, is undergoing a crisis. The site currently has only the statement "Regretfully, Developers' Nation is no longer able to provide service" and a link to PalmOS.com. However, according to PalmStation, the site has been hacked and infected with the sadmind/IIS worm.

To make the situation more confusing, a reader has reported that the following was posted in a Palm developers' forum earlier today:

Developers Nation is, unfortunately, no longer offering developer support. The current economic situation and their business model were not, it seems, compatible. We regret that our partnership didn't develop as planned, and we're presently exploring other sustainable methods for offering public developer support. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please send them to me directly and I'll happily route them to the appropriate people at Palm.
Regards, Owen G. Emry DTS Engineer Palm, Inc.
Developers' Nation provides technical support services and access to a searchable Knowledge Base of technical information derived from Palm's own proprietary technical archive. Through its strategic relationship with Palm, it has been able to secure the rights to offer one to one technical support for developers and publish, host and maintain Palm's internal technical library.

devnation is closing down, and, they were hacked. the timing of the discovery of the "hack" is just perfect for a double whammy. the site may have been hacked for a few days before, and maybe no-one noticed. in any event, the webmasters have cleaned up the hack - and, all site redirection gives "sorry, we are no longer providing service" messages. pity. the discussion now is what other alternatives will developers have to devnation?

Well, this just sort of deepen the sense of crisis surrounding Palm, doesn't it?

Perhaps Palm shall have to think about bringing what Developer Nation's been providing back in-house, even though it may mean increasing headcounts in the software division despite the current cash crunch.

Developers are the future of the company and Palm should do everything in its power to safeguard this valuable resource and advantage.

Is it really needed? I've been developing Palm apps for years and never used anything other than the forums.

As a developer myself, I'm really disappointed that DN is shut down. It was highly helpful. Until Palm "re-internalizes" its knowledge bases, I suggest all us developers unite and create a Yahoo group. Beyond that, we have #palmchat and the yahoo groups that are out there now. Maybe eLance too. Just a bit of patience and everything will be back together.
