Make Movies of Palm Applications with Camtasia
TechSmith Corporation has announced Camtasia 2.2, which is a Windows screen camcorder and video production tool that allows the user to record, edit, and publish videos.
Palm users benefit in two ways. First, they can make movies of Palm applications for display on a Windows PC. Second, they can make movies of Windows apps for viewing on a Palm device using a Palm media encoder/player like TealMovie.
Palm developers looking to show off their wares can demonstrate all the features of their software to shareholders, customers, other developers, or trainees, no matter where they are in the world. Technical support personnel can create a library of troubleshooting videos, and users can create movies that showcase their favorite software.
Using Camtasia with the PalmOS Emulator (POSE) on a Windows PC, all who develop or deploy Palm applications can create industry-standard movies for demonstration purchases or for training. These videos can be played back on any PC, and a Palm device isn't necessary to create them. With its efficient compression and support for standard movie and streaming formats, Camtasia creates movies that can be e-mailed, put on a Web site, or streamed live over the Net.
It also includes some special effects, such as:
- watermarks and floating annotations
- screen transitions
- zooming & panning
- the ability to draw on the screen
- custom mouse pointers (such as a virtual stylus)
- keyboard and mouseclick audio effects
- visual mouseclicks to show your users exactly where to tap
- audio to narrate your segments
Steve Litchfield, editor for PalmUser magazine, used Camtasia and the PalmOS emulator to create a Palm tutorial CD that he sells from his web site. "I've been very pleased with the Camtasia apps, especially the Recorder, which has so many configuration options that I could tell it exactly what to do and how to save."
A 30-day trial version is available for download at PalmGear. The registered version costs $150 for a single-user license.
