Week in Review: Sept. 23 - Sept. 29

Posted By: Ed on Sunday, September 30, 2001 11:20:07 AM

Three new applications made it a good week for people who own handhelds with expansion cards. PiDirectVFS can run apps directly from the cards and FilePoint 1.5 can help keep files in either RAM or a memory card organized. Avantage is a special-purpose app for storing AvantGo on expansion cards.

There was good news for people looking for external keyboards, too. The SnapNtype and ThumBoard are clip-on keyboards available now while the FrogPad is coming later this year.

The Samsung I300 smartphone is getting close to its release date, and people who buy it from Sprint will be able to use the Blazer Web browser for free.

There were no less than four reviews printed this week: the Visor Pro, Rayman, the Parafone cordless phone Springboard, and the IrKB101 Wireless Keyboard Module.

In the forums, there's an interesting discussion of fantasy Sony models and another on sharing calendar events.

In the Market Place, there's a Sony N710C for sale at only $350. There's also a Palm m505 with a Palm games pack going for only $320. There are two Sony S320's on sale, too, along with tons of other handheld-related items.

Be Careful with FilePoint if you use PiDirectVFS

I love PiDirectVFS. Excellent app. Word of advice: reinstall McFile after you've installed PiDirect.

IMPORTANT: I was using PiDirectVFS very successfully when I installed FilePoint 1.5. While I am sure FilePoint is a useful app, I didn't have much use for it so I removed it from my m505. Say goodbye to PiDirect; Hosed it! Had to hard reset and re-format my card in order to get it back. That's my $.02

 Not entirely true

The statement above "PiDirectVFS can run apps directly from the cards" is misleading. It should read "...can run some apps..." I loaded the program and put Tinysheet4 on my card. The icon for Tinysheet showed up in my launcher but everytime I tried to launch the program it crashed and I had to reset my Palm.

I am running TinySheet 4.0 just fine from my card using PiDirectVFS

Are you running any hacks like afterburner or others?
