Rumor: What is the Sony Clié T415?

The rcs eshop, which has accidentally leaked information on upcoming products before, is now listing a handheld called the Sony Clié T415 B,W. The only details given are that it runs Palm OS 4.1, has a "slim design", and costs $300.

It is complete speculation, but the "B,W" in its name could indicate that this will be a black and white model. Some users have been asking for a monochrome handheld with Sony's high-resolution screen. This would fill the large price gap between the $200 S320 and the $400 N610C.

A remote possibility is this is a model with built-in wireless.

The rcs eshop will almost certainly remove the item as soon as Sony hears about it but a screenshot of the listing is available.

Thanks to Mike Cane for the tip. -Ed

SLIM and B,W?

B,W? I hope it stands for Bluetooth & Wireless. :) Will they release theirs before Palm and Hanspring?

Slim is always good. We can also infer that it's silver because of the '/S' in model number (PEG-T415/S).

Just a guess. They probably had a Promotion that bundled a 710 with a case to get them out the door after the 760 came out. That might explain the extra P in the number. They now list it as being out of stock so maybe it worked.

$100 more for hi-res?

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/5/2001 12:51:58 PM #
While standardizing the screen resolution on the Sony's would certainly be a good idea, a hi-res monochrome unit would hardly justify a $100 (50%) price difference. Would anyone really pay that much for a monochrome thats only advantage was hi-res?

It could be monochome, and just be thinner than the S320, trying to be a Palm m500/Edge killer, though both of those devices were pretty much DOA and don't really need killing at this point. :)

$300 for a high-res screen VS $500 for a color? I'd buy it.

It may be hi res + mp3 capability. That may justify the cost.

I want it thin and fully aluminum. God, I can't wait until it's release day.

Yes, the phantom Sony has disappeared from RCS's web page. But I would like to take this moment to thank RCS for yet again going above and beyond the call of duty in promoting rank speculation and wild anticipation among the PDA crowd.

SONY VS. PALM

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/9/2001 2:11:24 PM #
PALM WILL BE DEATH IN FEW TIMES IF NEXT PALM DON'T INCORPORATE HI-RESOLUTION SCREEN, 16 MB AND LOW PRICE. USER'S WILL NOT PAY $ 500,00 FOR A BAD PRODUCT. PLEASE PALM INC., LISTEN YOUR PUBLIC. GIVES A HIGH-RESOLUTION PALM.
