Digital Link Springboard Still Coming Soon
When Sprint announced a combo wireless phone and modem called the Digital Link, it said the Springboard module would be available in September. It has recently appeared on the Sprint webstore with the note "temporarily out of stock". When it is finally available, it will cost $250. It provides 7 hours of talk time and 300 hours of standby time and weighs 3.4 ounces.
The Digital Link phone/modem, which will be made by AirPrime, will be third-generation-ready. When Sprint PCS launches 3G service next year, users will only need to do a software upgrade to take advantage of high-speed, always-on access to the Internet as well as high-quality video and audio.
Recently, Sprint licenced Handspring's Blazer Web browser so it will be available for users of this Springboard.
The Digital Link has to be compared with the HandSpring VisorPhone, which has similar functions and is now free with a service activation. At the Digital Link's original announcement, a Sprint PCS spokesperson said that customers will still be interested in the Digital Link module, despite its higher price, because Sprint offers the widest coverage area and because current Sprint PCS customers can put the Springboard on the same phone number as their cellphone for a small additional monthly charge.
