Sony has posted a modified version of the Palm Desktop on its support website that allows Clié handhelds to work with PCs running Windows XP. There are separate versions for the S320, N610C, and unmodified N710C. The N760C and T415 already work with WinXP. Users simply need to visit the Sony Support site and click on the "Updates" link for their model to find the correct version. Update: Sony has added a version for the S300. There are other updates for N710C and N760C users: a new OpenMG Jukebox 2.2 and a Memory Stick AudioLibrary update. Both of these are bug fixes. Only Sony models have a problem with Windows XP. The latest versions of the Palm Desktop work correctly with other models. Thanks to nXt for the tip. -Ed Related Information: More Stories Like This... My 610C has also worked flawlessly with XP home edition. I just used the regular Desktop software from Palm. RE: Ok...I.M. Anonymous @ 12/30/2001 5:34:52 PM #
me too... maybe the old version doesn't work with XP at clean installation? Sony Only
There are quite a few different versions of the Palm Desktop. Each handheld maker (including Palm, Sony, Handspring, etc.) has its own, modified for the special needs of its handhelds. While some handhelds from one manufacturer can use the Desktop app made by another manufacturer, not all can. So, if you are already able to use Palm's version of the Desktop app running under WinXP with your Sony handheld, you don't need to worry about this. But that's not a solution for everyone. --- News Editor RE: Ok...I.M. Anonymous @ 12/31/2001 12:20:33 AM #
Once the handheld device driver is loaded from the Sony CD, an N610C works flawlessly with Palm Desktop 4.01 from the Palm website. I don't see what took Sony so long to provide an update.
shouldn't it be version 2.4 like sony says on their instructions? anybody else? RE: My newly installed MSALoader displays version 1.0I.M. Anonymous @ 12/30/2001 5:55:28 PM #
MSBate shows ver. 1.0 but Palm OS "Info" feature shows ver. 2.4 RE: My newly installed MSALoader displays version 1.0I.M. Anonymous @ 12/31/2001 9:51:48 PM #
Do I need the MSALoader patch ? I have a stock 710C (not upgraded) that I sync to Win98. Or is it an XP only kinda thing ?
RE: where is the update for s-300?
since Sony discontinued the S-300, I dont think they had plans to make an update for it. Sony is good with leaving discontinued products REALLY in the dust. -Mario msmasitti@yahoo.com RE: where is the update for s-300?I.M. Anonymous @ 12/31/2001 9:18:25 AM #
When I had my s-300 I was able to hot sync no problem with XP as long as I was using the serial cradle. RE: where is the update for s-300?
I believe that the problem was with USB support only because in the Win98 version, a special program was needed to "intercept" the usb signals since PalmOS 3.5 did not have native USB support. That's why the serial cradle would work.

Sony has posted a WinXP update for the S300:

Presently I have Windows 98 Second edition,
I'd like to upgrade to windows XP and use my Sony Clie s300. I confused, when the Hotsync Manager 4.0.1 update, says I presently have Palm desktop Software ver 3.1 on PC, and What is the proper Procedure?
Other than the lack of the Notepad conduit, and the little bar at the bottom saying "Sony" instead of "Palm", does anyone know how Palm Desktop and Palm Desktop for Clies is any different? RE: What's the difference??
I'm not sure it is, really. The differences are the drivers and files specifically made for Sony's product (like USB switcher).

Anyone have trouble hot synching with USB cable after loading Windows XP? I now get error message on Clie saying cannot hot synch because the port is being used by another application. Have loaded update from Sony website. Have removed and loaded original Clie Palm software and still no go. Help!!
