Quickies: 16 MB m130 & i705, MyHandEmail, Palm, PIC

Tony Rudenko's PalmPilotUpgrade.com has just added the Palm m130 and i705 to their line of 16 MB upgrades. It costs $120. -Tony

MyHandEmail will be shutting down as of March 31. It's an AvantGo channel that allows users to send and receive e-mail from any POP3 account. The owners are accepting offers to buy the service. -Ed

Palm Inc. filed papers on Friday with the Securities and Exchange Commission that will allow it to occasionally sell up to $200 million in common and preferred stock and other securities. This doesn't mean the company intends to do so immediately, or even that it will sell the entire amount. This is just notification that it might at some point in the future. The company would to use the proceeds for general corporate purposes, including capital expenditures, and working capital. -Ed

In an effort to decrease bandwidth use and in response to user requests, the PIC AvantGo channel and wireless version no longer lists the last ten reader comments. Of course, these are still available on the main version of the site. -Ed

No more comments on the Mobile version

No offense to the site, but the comments are probably the main reason I read the stories, articles, and reviews.

Yeah, I know. I'm probably weird.

I would have to echo this too. The story is read and is gone from from memory, but the whacky and sometime zany comments keeps me sync'ing the old device. Thousands of people across the globe will have to alter their syncing habits. Thanks a lot Ed 8-)

Don't blame Ed . . . Blame Avantgo for charging wacky rates . . . .

I thought AvantGo charged by the user, not by the amount of data. Cost isn't the reason given in the article.

No, it doesn't directly have to do with AvantGo. We're close to maxing out the amount of bandwidth we currently have allocated from our hosting company so we're looking for ways to reduce the amount we use without affecting the site too much. The other option is to buy more, and we're not exactly raking in the dough here. The AvantGo channel is a large percentage of the bandwidth we use, though, so reducing its size helps a lot.

Did you actually find the comments on the mobile channel useful? We were only showing the last few that were posted. They weren't threaded so we got complaints that they were hard to follow. Before you ask, there is no way we're going to be able to display all the comments on the mobile channel. On some articles, they add up to 200 K, which I'm sure is far more than most of you have allocated for the entire AvantGo channel. So we thought that this would be a good way of reducing bandwidth usage a lot while affecting the minimal amount of people.

No good news - the comments where the main reason to subcribe to the channel. I was about to ask for more then 10 comments on the AvanGo-Channel. Canīt you at least keep the comments in the mobil version?

Actually, in all honesty, I read the comments on the mobile version every time I looked at the PIC channel on my Palm.

Now here's the kicker, I found that I only looked at the PIC channel on my Palm about once a week, but I would always synchronize it, sometimes twice a day.

So yes, I read the comments on the mobile version, but I rarely read the mobile version anyways come to think of it.

I guess I'm one of the major bandwidth hogs here. :)

Why not cut it from 10 down to 5 comments? That would still save some bandwidth but not cut out the comments altogether. The ability to read comments in conjunction with the current news is what sets apart this site's AvantGo channel.

Please consider doing something like this.

Thanks

OK, Comments will be back April 1, 2002

As of April 1, PalmInfocenter will start charging US$ 20.- per month for users who wish to read comments on the Avantgo Channel. The proceeds of this monthly fee will be used to pay for extra bandwidth and to FINALLY let Ed buy some new, desperately needed wall-paper ;)

Please line up now for this premium PIC service.

I read it for the articles, but kept syncing to get the comments during the day. Oh well, you gotta do what you gotta do... I guess I was hogging the bandwidth along with Raji :-)

Disclaimer up front: I am NOT an Avantgo user so I personally couldn't care less about the mobile channel, but I also realise that it is useful feature for a lot of people.

Someone said: Why not cut it from 10 down to 5 comments?

Well, that is rather short-sighted...

If people are going to re-sync to get the comments, they will just do so more often, because of the lower number shown, in turn leeping the bandwidth requirements the same IF NOT MORE (since there are only 5 comments, there could actually be people who think they are going to miss a troll's comments so might sync more than double the time).

I am all for Ed cutting this out if it means keeping PIC free AND up and running!

I think I speak for most of us here in that we do NOT want PIC to shut down because of high cost in maintaining the user comments on the Avantgo Channel.

(I know, I know, where did I get the nerve to speak in your behalf, sorry...)

Ed,

Why can't you set the Avantgo caching of PIC to once a day or something. Let Avantgo cache the data from PIC once a day instead of a per sync basis.

You'd trade off up to the minute news for lots more comments and plummenting the bandwidth even more.

MyHandEmail Sucked Anyway--No mobile comments!!!

C @ 3/25/2002 11:13:01 AM #
I knew that it had to be taken off eventually...because of Avantgo enforcing their policy of only 8 users of any personal channel that is not under contract with Avantgo...I stopped using the dumb service cause it was giving me problems anyway...I was getting errors all the time with it so I just let it go bye bye :-( Also this site made a mistake with not letting comments be posted while mobile anymore...that totally sucks!!!

We recently reactivated the ability to post comments from the mobile/AvantGo channel. You can identify these as the user name for all of them is "PIC mobile user".

Disable posting from mobile device as well

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/25/2002 2:37:04 PM #
You had to cut out the user comments from the AvantGo channel. Too bad, I like the comments sometimes. But I can understand that you don't have unlimited bandwidth at PIC.

I suggest that you watch the quality of the user comments for a few weeks. If you see a lot of repitition, then remove the capability of users to post comments from AvantGo. The potential problem is that since an AvantGo user cannot see other users' comments, he won't know if his post is a near repeat of an existing comment.

Disable posting from mobile device as well - LOL

As if THIS has EVER stopped the morons / trolls from writing repetitive, already existing comments while on their desktop and being able to read all the comments.

Hahaha, thanks for the laugh.

Comments were much appreciated

I read with great sadness the demise of the comments on the Avantgo edition. My first priority was the articles, which I always find informative, valuable and timely, BUT....the reader comments, while on rare occasions irritable, were, for the most part, where I gleaned a lot of information about Palm, Sony and Handspring, as well as the many Palm periferals out there. PIC provides a great service that is of great use to all us users out here, but many of Ed's articles are first time appraisals of new devices, cases, keyboards and other stuff. The users who commented filled in the gaps with their personal experience in using these items day to day. I frequently don't have time to go to PIC's homepage and scroll through all the comments and reviews but I enjoyed syncing and taking all that home with me to read at my leisure. I too used to hot sync frequently just to catch the stream of comments. I understand the reasons that compel PIC to cut this feature out but I hope that a way can be found to bring these forums back to the AvantGo channel again I think they are a beneficial part of the service. Perhaps, if it would help cut size, you might consider posting only the comments that registered users of PIC have posted or doing away with the anonymous post all together. This might cut down on the problems we have all experienced in here and allow for only the more pertinent content to be displayed. I don't mind logging in when I want to make a comment or two and I don't think the serious Palm Infocenter fans will either.

I will miss the User comments feature. The channel will still be one of my favorites. Keep up the good work!
