Quickies: PalmSource, MSB1, Wine Guide, Spell+ Hack

PalmSource, Inc. has announced it is taking reservations for two-day developer conferences to be held in Berlin, Paris and London. Called the PalmSource Europe Forum Series, these will be held in mid-May and will concentrate on Palm OS 5. -PR

Brando is now listing the Japanese version of the Sony PEGA-MSB1 Bluetooth Memory Stick on his main page. The price for U.S. customers is $210, as was quoted last week. -Anon

LandWare has released its Wine Enthusiast Guide 2002 on an MMC card. The app gives details, reviews and ratings for over 9,000 wines worldwide. As an added bonus, the remaining 3.7 MB on the MMC card is available to store other files. It costs $35. -PR

Spell+ Hack adds spell checking functionality to standard data entry fields. It works with the PalmOS built-in apps and with a range of third-party ones. It comes with two word lists, one containing over 84,000 US English spellings. The word lists can be stored in main memory or on a VFS memory card. It costs $20. -James Screech

Hmm

I wonder what PalmSource will be announcing in this new meeting. Maybe details or a glimpse of the new OS6 they are working on, and probably the current, if not added details on OS5.

AFAICT, these are for developers who couldn't afford to fly to San Jose in Feb. to the U.S. conference. The point isn't to make all the U.S. developers fly to Europe to learn new stuff. These may be a rehash of the Feb. conference, probably with some localized info, e.g. Differences in the German version of OS 5.

On the other hand, development of OS 5 and 6 has progressed a couple of months so they may have a little bit more to show but I don't think that is the point. This is for developers who haven't had a chance to learn much about OS 5 at all.

That's certainly how they have been pushing it.

Has anyone recieved one from Brando or another source and tested it in a U.S. version Palm OS (ie Sony CLie)?

There is a comment from someone who says it works here:

Also, I got this message last week:

Just so you know, the PEGA-MSB1 Bluetooth Mem Stick works quite happily on a N770U, in English. Just make sure you don't install the japanese text extension files. I managed to sync via bluetooth, as well as connect to a T39 Ericsson mobile.

Yea, but...

I'm really happy that there is a BT stick available now, but I really wish someone would come out with a sled, or the like. I really, really think most folks are going to want memory in their memory stick while they are using BT.

Not necessarily.... I have all my relevant apps in RAM anyways (SMS Program, E-Mail program, Browser, etc) and all my non-relevant apps on memory stick. (doc reader, games, etc)

It would be nice to be able to keep the BT stick in at all times, even when not using bluetooth, but I have a nice case for my Clie that lets me switch memory sticks as easily as pulling out a stylus. Besides, I'm not sure I'd like to leave the BT stick in there at all times if it sticks out a little bit.

Speed Issue with Spell+ Hack?

popko @ 4/9/2002 1:24:42 PM #
See how WordSmith and QuickWord are slow at spelling checking, I wonder if Spell+ Hack is has the same problem.

BTW, does it work with apps like QuickWrite or TextPlus? I use these types of "auto-complete" apps on a daily base to speed up my input. Now, having spelling check at the same time would be nice.

I am lost. But I am going to find myself. So if I return before I get back, please ask me to wait.

Wordsmith is not nearly as slow at spell checking as it used to be. The only reason I don't spell check it because I prefer to save the space.

I just love how Spell+ Hack states that it works with most third party applications but then doesn't give any additional info. What "third party" applications? Why not give a list? Does it work with WordSmith or Documents-to-Go?

Spell+ Hack will work with any application that uses standard data entry fields. With over 13,000 PalmOS applications listed on PalmGear alone it would be impractical to test it on all applications. However it does work with the PalmOS built in applications Address, Date Book, Mail, Memo Pad & To Do List.
