Canada Rocks!

big_raji @ 4/11/2002 9:38:34 AM #
I'm not sure what stores are like in the US, but when I walk into a Future Shop, Staples, or Office Depot, the PDA displays are predominantly Palm.

There is usually every single current model of Palm's, several models of Palms being "phased out", Handspring Visors, a couple of Clie's, two Blackberries, one HP Jornada, one Compaq Ipaq, and one Casio WinCE device.

I'm not complaining or anything, but aren't there more Windows PDA's out there than just the three models that are usually on display?

I saw a booth that shows the complete line-up, including accessories, for the HP Jornada @ the Office Place. But it seems that not many people have shown interest because of its monstrous price!!! I recall it is about CDN$899 including a free case or keyboard. CDN$899 can buy a very fast PC (without a monitor) up here. And the worst thing is that 15% tax rate in Ontario!!!

I would like to know what total sales of pda's are in Canada. It seems we have a good market, but it takes a while to get product (i.e. any sony product - had to order mine from US).

Interesting, because every time I walk up to a display in Canada, the salesperson is pushing Windows, not Palm. Even though the displayed models are predominantly Palm.

We canadians are smart enough to realise that commissioned sales people are to be taken with a grain of salt.

If you're an American visiting Canada, remember to file for your GST rebate. You get half of the 15% tax back. With current exchange rates, it makes buying things in Canada a good idea.

But the problem is that the Canadian units are priced based on $US, which means you are just paying the same amount of money in $Cdn currency. The worse is there are not many competition up here, which means generally they sell like MSRP prices. And there is tax! 15% in Ontario is ridiculously high, compared with anywhere in the world!!! You have to even pay 7% @ McDonalds if the amount is less than or equal to $4. YOu have to pay 15% if it is $4.01.

Not many to complain....

Here in the Chicagoland area (USA), the "weekend" newspaper advertisements have recently been showing around 4 to 8 ads for Palm OS devices, and 0 to 1 CE devices (per store). About 6 or more months ago the trend was more 50%/50%. The ads I am talking about a generally from CompUSA, Best Buy, Office Max, and Office Depot. Guess that shows where the retail chains are seeing best to put their advertising dollars.

When I lived in Toronto about 3 yrs ago, I had my colleague in the US purchase the IIIc for me, where she interofficed it to me (to avoid the duty I think-- global company). Otherwise I would have paid a lot more. Beautiful, absolutely beautiful country, great people, but the taxes and high cost of living killed me so I moved back.

$350 for a m505??!?

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/11/2002 10:45:41 AM #
Price the remaining ones around $200 and maybe they'll sell...
RE: $350 for a m505??!?

I partially agree, though $250 - $300 seems more reasonable. Used ones are selling for over $200 on eBay.

Under $300 seems very reasonable... Same specs as the m130 priced at $300... Better form factor is a plus, but the risk of a static problem still lingering, as well as a dimly lit screen should push the price down lower than the m130.

Canada sells old handhelds..

dhchung @ 4/11/2002 2:47:03 PM #
I believe that Sony T415 and S360 weren't available in Canada until last month. And ironically T415 was discontinued this month...
N760 weren't available until Dec 2001..
Many other major brands handhelds weren't available until new model is about to come out
That's why most of my friend and myself decide to buy PDA from eBay or in Hong Kong instead.
Really hope that Canadaian stores can catch up new products in quicker pace.

That's Sony's fault, not the stores.

Sony pretty much snubs Canada... We probably won't get any NR70's until christmas, if ever....

If you also look at the exchange rate, Sony charges more for their PDAs in Canada than in the US after exchange rate. It's almost like they don't even want to sell in Canada.

Dream on Chung. I bought a T415 in Winnipeg in late December from a Sony store. And Winnipeg usually gets stuff later than the larger metropolitan centers.

Hey, I'm in Winnipeg too... and the T415 was released DAMN close to christmas here... like the 19th or 20th. What the heck was the point? Lots of people already had their shopping done by that point.

Then, 2 weeks later, they gave away a free memory stick with the T415. That was a nice slap in the face for the people that bought one.

Then, 6 weeks later, it drops in price by $150. Gah.

The T415 is something I'd like to forget. I'm sure Sony is NOT going to release the T615 in Canada, solely based on T415 sales.

Morons.
