Quickies: Memory Stick, KB11, Lumitector, Crash, iMind, Ringtones

Amazon.com is offering Lexar 128 MB Memory Sticks for $50 after a rebate. -Ryan Humes

Several readers have reported that the SonyStore has told them that their KB11 folding keyboards are on the way. A spokesperson for Think Outside, the company that makes the KB11, says it will be available only through Sony. -Ed

The Lumitector, a screen protector that glows in the dark, is now available worldwide. -Larry

Crash 1.3 is now available. It's an application that replaces the dumb Palm OS dialog saying that there has been a fatal exception or similiar crash. eMDsoft has just released iMind 2.0 Professional Edition, a new version of its sticky note reminder application. It sports a new user interface, adds several advanced drawing features, supports color and HiRes screens, and includes a new, business-oriented set of 'Mind Art' graphics clips. It costs $9. -PR

PalmGSM.net released the Treo ringtone collection, which contains over 700 ringtones separated on 14 categories: Films and TV, Pop Music, Beatles, Classical Music, 70's Music, National Anthems, RAP Music, Rock and Metal, Bollywood (Indian), Christmas/New Year, Chinese Music, Japanese Music, St. Patrick's Day, Metallica Collection. The full version costs $10. It requires MonkeyRinger for Treo, which costs $7. -PR

Hey Think Outside

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/27/2002 10:34:15 AM #
Hey, Think Outside. You guys ought to think outside the one-device-one-keyboard box. I have bought two of your keyboards in the past - one for Palm Vx and one for m505. They are sitting in drawers. Now you expect me to buy one for my Sony? Sorry, but I won't buy any more single-model periperals. How about multiple adapters for one keyboard base?
RE: Hey Think Outside
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/27/2002 10:43:50 AM #
But how should they earn any money then ;)))))
RE: Hey Think Outside
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/27/2002 10:47:17 AM #
LOL. They already duped the guy into buying two, I don't think they care how he feels now.
eBay it!

One word for anyone complaining about the compatibility issue . . eBay!! I go in and out of PDAs multiple times per year (much to my wife's chagrin). Now with my Clie Gear Keyboard for my NR70V, I'm on my 5th Think Outside product. I've sold each of my 4 previous keyboards for about $20 less than I paid. I consider it a $20 lease fee (it makes me feel better). A small price to pay for the high quality products produced by Think Outside and the efficiency and utility that my keyboard brings me.

Thinkoutside's reasons have been well described by the two previous posters. Now why doesn't someone else create adaptors?
RE: Hey Think Outside
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/27/2002 11:58:02 AM #
I believe it actually has something to do with the electronics. I'm no EE, but I did try to create an adapter for the N/S series Keyboard to the T-Series.

It didn't work.

So it leads me to believe that the way this thing is engineered internally means that the circuitry around the docking point has to be different for each PDA it's used with. The major exception to this that I know of was the Handspring Visor/Handspring Visor Edge. Someone DID successfully create an adapter for that.

Download the technical specs on their site and maybe they'll shed a little more light on the situation.

RE: Hey Think Outside
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/27/2002 1:29:03 PM #
adapter would create at least 3 problems:
1) a larger keyboard...anything that can be removed needs more mechanical structure around it. Look at at Stowaway...and tell me how you'd make it adapter happy (for all the PDA/phone models that it's even been made to work with) and still be able to be closed..?
2) people griping about the adapter piece that would be lost.
3) people griping about think outside trying to make their money by selling a 'simple' adapter for 30-50 bucks.

If you recognize the value the Stowaway offers, and you have no trouble paying $300-600 every X months for a new PDA, why would you get worked up about buying a new $79 or $89 keyboard every X months?

There are adapters out there...

A bridge to use "m" series Palms on previous series peripherals. Granted, they only build 'em for Palm handhelds and not for Sony or Handspring.

Thanks!

It all worked out.

I'm always skeptical of mail in rebates, but if I don't get the $10 it's still a great deal.

Now I just need to find a "deal" on an SJ20!

Expires on the 28th!! This is part of the 20% memory discount at Dell Business. One of the best prices I've ever seen on memory stick media. Search for A0038045 to find this Lexar 128MB memory stick priced at $60 - automatic 20% - $10 rebate = $38 + tax shipped free.

PR @ 8/27/2002 11:15:20 AM #
unfortunately that imind demo is so badly crippled with nearly every feature disabled, that i can't get any idea what it can do. guess i won't be buying it if i can't try out a decent version. bah....

RE: imind...well worth it
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/27/2002 11:59:08 AM #
I purchased an earlier version of iMind some months ago, and just received my upgrade to v2 yesterday, after playing with the demo. I agree, the demo has several features crippled, but it doesn't take too much imagination to figure what the 'beam' function does, or what the 'grid' would look like. And the user's manual included with the demo has full documentation of all of the features as well. To make a long story short...it is a great app, with great features and support, and it costs alot less than the other sticky reminder type programs I've tried and purchased.

RE: imind
PR @ 8/27/2002 12:49:41 PM #
yeah, i guess i can read the manual, and check the website...but as for myself, i need to play with the program myself, and get more of a feel for how it works before i buy it. i don't mind limited trial periods, but i think the software should be mostly (if not fully) functional for the trial period. i think it hurts their sales by not having a better demo. it certainly turned me away.

just my little rant of the day...

RE: imind
PalmDoc @ 8/27/2002 2:33:37 PM #
I think the amount of cripple-ware is proportional to the amount of piracy. It has become so easy for hackers to defeat password and registration schemes, that developers are increasingly limiting the scope of demo software to prevent theft and increase sales.

PR makes a valid point, but the developer may feel that the loss of potential sales from a weak demo is worth the very real threat of lost sales to piracy.

Just my rant of the day...

Lumitector

Sounds like a good idea, but how long will it glow for?

RE: Lumitector
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/27/2002 11:52:35 AM #
According to their website 6-8 hours after 30 minutes exposure to daylight or flourescent light.

Will it work on Color Handhelds? The site doesn't really say, but the order screen lists M505 and M515's.
RE: Lumitector
Guinfs @ 8/27/2002 12:34:41 PM #

I believe it will since the glowing part is on top of the grfitti area. On the other hand, I believe that the m500 or m505 already have that area lit (with the backlight) it would make the gadget useless for those models.

Fender @ 8/27/2002 12:44:17 PM #
I bought a set of Luminectors. The glow-in-the-dark thing is ok, but what I like best is that the graffiti area is easier to see in dim light. I use TealScript and entering graffiti caps is done by writing on the line between the abc and 123 portion of the graffiti area. I was having trouble seeing this because of the glare of the shiny graffiti surface.
It is also the best screen protector that I've ever seen. It is shiny like the screen on my Sony and you really can't even tell that it's there. They really are easy to install because they're in two sections. I removed the covering from the graffiti part of it first and lined it up and stuck it on the graffiti area. Then I peeled off the screen part and it stuck to the screen nice and neat. There were a couple of bubbles, but I worked them out with my stylus.
The price is higher than other screen protectors, but from what I can see they last much longer.

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/27/2002 12:47:03 PM #
I have a Palm M515 and even on the low backlight setting, the graffity area is perfectly vissable in the dark.
RE: Lumitector
PR @ 8/27/2002 2:08:41 PM #
yes, they make them for m500 series...

RE: Lumitector
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/27/2002 3:08:36 PM #
Guinfs, are you saying that the Lumitector has its covers in a 2-piece detatcable design? So if I wanted to cover only the Grafitti area (and not the screen) I could do that?

Also, the m505 is the only Palm handheld with an illuminated Grafitti area. the M500 and 515 do not have that area illuminated (it was to save on battery life for the brighter 515 screen).

Does the surface of the Grafitti area protector really feel as nice as the web site says it does? Is it better than other screen protectors on the market? I actually care more about protecting the grafitti area from scratches more so than the screen (I have a hardcase for my m505).

RE: Lumitector
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/29/2002 4:36:47 AM #
Like I said, although the M515 does not have an illuminated graffity area, the screen is bright enough to make the graffity area clearly vissible. Or do I have better eyesight than others?

Any plans for beyond 128MB Memory Stick?

dhaupert @ 8/27/2002 1:32:03 PM #
I never hear anything about Memory Sticks going beyond the 128MB ceiling they currently seem to have. Other formats have blasted past them, and I'm wondering if anyone knows the roadmap for larger sticks.

Thanks in advance!

RE: Any plans for beyond 128MB Memory Stick?
Ed @ 8/27/2002 1:52:36 PM #
When Sony announced the Memory Stick Duo back in June, it laid out a timetable of its hopes for both formats.

Later this year or early next year, Sony hopes to have Memory Stick Duos up to 128 MB. It hopes to have 1 GB regular Memory Sticks by that same time. In 2004, Sony believes it will have 2 GB Memory Sticks and 1 GB Duos. The year after, it hopes to release 4 GB Memory Sticks.
