ScummVMScummVM is an implementation of the SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) engine used in various Lucas Arts games such as Monkey Island, Indiana Jones titles and Day of the Tentacle.

The official ScummVM website has a list of supported games and known bugs. The new version includes many fixes and game compatibility updates. There are additional details about the Palm OS port at this site.

Install game files to memory card

boldman @ 5/13/2003 1:04:51 PM #
How do I do that with the Install tool? It won't install files not associated with an application, and there's no way to associate all those different files with the game machine. I don't have a memory card writer. Any other way?

Use Syncwizard.

You should be able to find it on palmgear or handango.

Just mount your memory card, and put the game files in the folder that the readme file tells you to. /palm/programs/scummvm

Who's the genius behind the name?

SCUMM? In a bad naming contest this would be a sure winner... (=D)

The acronym for what SCUMM stands for is in the article: Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion. It's not exactly like it's something that was named to be popular commercially.... just an internal joke, as SCUMM was something LucasArts developed internally to make these kinds of games.

It's nice to see that companies are porting (or atleast emulating) games for ARM based machines. But personally, let me know when they port Full Throttle or Dark Forces =PPPPPP

RE: Who's the genius behind the name?
iebnn @ 5/14/2003 3:33:41 AM #
Dark Forces uses a raycasting engine. It does not use SCUMM. I don't believe it is open source.

RE: Who's the genius behind the name?
Bartman007 @ 5/14/2003 5:30:58 AM #
I wasn't intending to imply that DarkForces used SCUMM. I just meant was saying that I would like other LucasArts games were ported. (Open-source issues and other real life problems aside.)

Yes, let's complain

tl47 @ 5/13/2003 4:55:49 PM #
Ok, so it's free, must be lousy and let's just complain. Wonderful. No wonder there are less and less free software available for this platform.

Seriously, that screenshot looks fantastic. And I was even thinking... FINALLY the Palm has more of such stuff. It's probably the last major platform (Palm, PPC, Linux) to have something like this working well. In fact, there are still many simple emulators it could use. Like one for the TI85 or TI calculators (the HP48 emulator is good too... but TI scientific calculators are more common, and HP likes RPN too much).

Back to the future?

Even a low-end Palm is much, much more powerful than a Commodore 128.

Wondeful!

This is simply wonderful and anyone who says otherwise should be kicked in the unmentionables!

I wish the Samsung SGH-i500 would be released earlier than the end of the year so I could enjoy this now.

Now, who is up for the job of porting Exult or Sarien?

Or perhaps even Visualboy Advance!

/Robert

I agree, I was so excited when I first saw this on Clie Source. I've had various betas on my Clie for about 4 months now, and I've played through almost all my old Lucas Arts games! I'm almost done w/ Fate of Atlantis now, and I think I'll play the monkey Island games next.

we started a sarien port a long long time ago. all we had to target back then was the IIIc and iiixe i think... we never got far, mostly due to the way palmos does memory allocation (its a real bizatch).

unless the memory allocation system has changed in os5 i dont think you will see anyone do a sarien port.

you can check our CVS, there is some stuff in there to get started on a sarien port.. just no working sarien on palm.. :P

where are the games ?

www.google.com abandonware [game of your choice] .. is that really so difficult ? :-)

RE: where are the games ?
Thunderball @ 5/13/2003 6:33:45 PM #
The other option, is of course to actually own the games. :P

For example, I recently bought a CD compilation with Sam'n Max + Day of the Tentacle for a very cheap sum.

I believe Lucasarts has does have an online shop with a few games as well (but do mail them to keep the pressure up on demand... I did about them re-releasing the Monkey Island Madness CD).

You don't have to convert the games. Simply copy the games as instructed in the readme file to your memoy card and the ScummVM on your Palm will interpret the game files and let you play the game.

The ReadME file doesn't quite explain how to put the games on your memory card. It's not possible to create folders on it.

go SCUMMVM for PalmOS!

What gives?

What's with the bulk of immature "so what" comments in this thread? It obviously shows the youth of those posting, as they're probably too young to remember some of the greatest (and most hilarious) graphical adventures of all time.

The Monkey Island series is legendary, as is the Maniac Mansion series (Day of the Tentacle is still one of my favorites). And let's not even mention Sam & Max!

I don't understand the tone of most of the posts so far. These were great games, and the ability to play them on a PalmOS device is wonderful. Why the apathy?

Definately. I can't remember having a more satisfying storyline to a game than the classic Lucas Arts stuff. It won't seem to work right yet, but just talking about them makes me want to go dig out the CD's. If you haven't ever played them, do yourself a favor and give them a shot.

Scumm is Awesome!
And the idea of porting it to Palm is even better!

Playing DOTT, Monkey Island 2, Indy IV... Those old good games on my Palm!! What a dream ;)

Problem is: none of them is playable under the TT! DOTT crashes as soon as I open the clock door. Indy crashes after the third screen... :( I think the author deserves all our consideration for this marvelous piece of software, but I just wished they would work on the TT :)

RE: What gives?
Domiriel @ 5/14/2003 5:52:28 AM #
No apathy here, my friend! I just dug out my old games and can't wait to play them when the emulator gets a bit more stable (I also found it often crashes). I spent countless hours playing LucasArts games years ago while I was a college student, and my only fear is that I won't have the time to do it now.

It would be nice to see it produce sound on the TT. I just LOVED The Secret of Monkey Island's theme song, and the sequence where the pirate ghost skeletons dance, towards the middle of the game. If it could be a bit faster, it wouldn't hurt. I'll definitely keep an eye on this one!

I have reported the problems of running ScummVM on the Tungsten T. From Chris Apers, the author of the Palm OS port, Tungsten T is currently not supported by ScummVM due to its limited dynamic heap size.

I thought that Sony and Palm Inc. both used the PalmOS, and hence, both had the same memory heap limitations...

But I can see I'm wrong ;)

What a coincidence!

Just about 6 months or so ago I started playing one of the Old Indy games on my Commodore Amiga! I stopped because I had to put the Amiga back in the closet (Being a sentimental fool, I pull it out every few months...) - Now and can pick up where I left off on my PDA! I think I had just found the catacombs... Where did I leave that Whip???

Ah, I remember Indy on the Amiga. Great stuff. Would also be great to have the Sarien stuff on PalmOS. I wonder why it's possible to do SCUMM, but not Sarien on the Palm? Seems like this memory bottleneck (the 64K heap?) is a real problem...

RE: sarien
dark fiber @ 5/14/2003 9:45:53 AM #
its more what you have to do when you allocate memory and use pointers and such. palmos does all its memory allocation via handles, which may have been fine back when palm 128kb machines were around, but its imo a poor way of doing things now.

>>Seems like this memory bottleneck (the 64K heap?) is a real problem...

The Tungsten T has a 786k heap i believe ( i think the T|C is much larger). The Sony OS 5 devices have more (2mb++?). You can't win i guess - people complained about the new Sony devices when they came out because you could only use 11mb of the 16mb of RAM (they needed the extra heap for the web browser) - but now we see a new use / need of this memory.

Off-topic: How about an emulator for Sierra games?

peter_ngai @ 5/16/2003 12:42:12 PM #
This is excellent progress. My all time favorite games are from Sierra (Leisure Suit Larry, etc..,). Does anyone know about a Palm simulator for these games? :)

Thanks,
Peter

ScummVM on Palm

lionoche @ 8/7/2003 2:25:52 AM #

It may be interesting for some to know that the emulator has now version 0.5.

It's a stable release on Palm Zire 71 which is pretty much the same like Tungsten T. Just take a look at http://capers.free.fr/ScummVM/ the homepage from the guy who ported the emulator to Palm OS...

I am now able to play Day of the tentacle and Maniac Mansion enhanced, but both without sound (that time with undertitles)

Regards,

Lionel
