Wow indeed! This might be the game we've all been waiting for, an Argentum-style game for the Palm OS! w00t w00t!

Exactly what the Palm OS has needed. Looks great. Will be downloading and playing tonight. Hopefully it will be a great success (which I bet it will), spurring more like it.

And the really amazing thing is that it runs on os4 devices too!

i want to try it but distributing palm software as a windows executable is a BAD idea. All i want is the PRC file. I dont want directories made in my \program files\ directory, nor do i want registry entries and an entry in my add/remove software control panel. I use the Palm Simulator but I dont have the Palm Desktop thing installed - the installer dies if it cant find the Palm Desktop software. Does someone have the PRC available online?

Looks absolutely fantastic on an NX70V in Hires+. Let's hope there will be more 320x480 games forthcoming.

Amazing indeed. It runs very good on my 33MHz SJ22 WITHOUT overclocking. Even has unit speech. Wow.

runs great on my Tungsten|T, except, i tried it out, and built up an army, of like 10000, and it was alittle slow, but i dont think anyone would waste their time, but me, trying to see how much this game can support.

This game is remarkable!

Excellent performance on the Clie' SJ33, even with "alot going on".

I'm not usually into games of this type, but the graphics and sound, not to mention ease of gameplay, just lured me right in.

Extravagant graphics & sound options

pixelator @ 9/12/2003 1:02:27 PM #
You can select the following options for play:

- Variable color hue/saturation/brightness
- Resolution modes: 160x480 and 320x480
- Toggling graphic effects for performance

...The game is impressive. The audio samples tend to cut off at times and the speed of menu animation is a little clunky on my 300MHz overclocked NX70V, but the sheer expanse of RTS graphical real estate on the screen is awesome for a game of this type.

Excellent so far.

I'm stuck at work....anyone had a chance yet to observe performance on a T|T/T|T2? Also, I will also chime in and say that Handmark's a good company but I *HATE* anything that's distributed within a Windows executable. Just gimmie a zip and let me snag the PRC out of that, please! This is the same thing that we went through when Real released their player for OS5 a few months ago-a 9mb+ download just to get the tiny Palm Real Player out of it. Ugh!

I was on the beta test team for this and played it on my NX70V but never had any problems with the animations being clunky. You can adjust the game speed, if you increase the speed it will probably improve the animations for you (check the Options menu and adjust the speed).

Playing it right now. Graphics are stunning and the options are great. I'd even go so far as to say it feels like RoN. Great game. Considering purchasing it.

VERY nice. First software I've bought for my Palm in a very long time.

$30 bucks for this? gaww...

Strategic assault $6
Argentum is $20
Buglord is $20
AOE is $30

It only worth $11.99 at most, not $30. It's only slightly better than Strategic assault, not even half as much fun as argentum, and DEFINITELY far worst than AOE.

I've been playing on my T|T and it's been completely smooth so far with about 30 units and 10 buildings on the screen! It's like playing Starcraft (with pc-quality graphics and sounds) on a hanheld.

RE: Extravagant graphics & sound options
guesswho @ 9/13/2003 11:27:01 AM #
Try argentum and AOE before thinking WI is the greatest RTS for handheld.
RE: Extravagant graphics & sound options
pixelator @ 9/13/2003 12:35:38 PM #
This game definitely *looks* to be on a par with the other PPC RTS games. Only extensive play will show whether it's superior or lacks the depth. Age of Empires and Argentum are tough to beat, huge screen/resolution notwithstanding.

TennMan - please re-read what I posted: The MENU animations are clunky. Very choppy for some reason. The game itself is fairly smooth except for audio dropouts here and there.

RE: Extravagant graphics & sound options
TennMan @ 9/13/2003 4:00:31 PM #
My bad, I just saw animations and knew they weren't a problem but I see what you're saying with the MENU animations. Sorry.

RE: Extravagant graphics & sound options
jws @ 9/14/2003 3:50:40 AM #
Yes, even if it is the best RTS for Palm OS, 30$ is way too much. I'm not buying it until they lower the price.

How Much Free RAM needed?

kevdo @ 9/12/2003 4:28:49 PM #
The system requirements say you need a Palm device with 8MB of RAM but surely this thing doesn't need 8 MB of free RAM.... right?

-Kevin Crossman

RE: How Much Free RAM needed?
IanJD @ 9/12/2003 5:04:06 PM #
No, but it's using up 2.6Mb on my TC (some of which is because it's using the high res data) so since there isn't s PalmOS device with between 2Mb and 8Mb, you need an 8Mb Palm.

How to move to SD card

dkushner @ 9/12/2003 4:45:52 PM #
I have a Tungsten T2, has anyone figured out how to move this game to an external SD card? I tried moving the files manually and couldn't get it to work.

Very cool game.

RE: How to move to SD card
scottlu @ 9/12/2003 5:17:58 PM #
I've run from a card without problems, with no additional software installed (e.g. no PowerRun). You first need to move the files using some utility (Filez perhaps?)

The files to move are:

Warfare Incorporated.prc
htdata824.pdb (or htdata816.pdb or htdata416.pdb)

RE: How to move to SD card
Pathdoc @ 9/13/2003 10:10:15 PM #
I get a message saying that the appropriate graphics file is not installed with all three files on my SD card. It works fine with PowerRun, however.

RE: How to move to SD card
sford @ 9/14/2003 1:26:07 PM #
Yup, I get the same message when all three are on my memory stick. Used Clie Files to move all three back to RAM and have had no problems.

RE: How to move to SD card
Pathdoc @ 9/14/2003 5:27:46 PM #
Okay, I have figured out part of my problem. It appears that LauncherX does not like running the program from the SD card. If you move the three files to the launcher directory and launch it with Palm's default launcher, everything works. If you use LauncherX, you get the message described above. PowerRun works fine so Iguess I will be using that. Don't know if ZLauncher or the other 3rd party launchers out their have problems or not.

You can get a PRC in a winzip off Handmark's site

great to see a real RTS implemented... but..

ardiri @ 9/12/2003 8:18:11 PM #
yes, it is great news to see that someone has taken the effort to put a real RTS based game out on the market :) great job to handmark/spiffcode :)

the only thing really lacking here is a nice midi music backend - the audio has simple sampled sounds, but, to play a real RTS - you need music. just look at the classic implementation of warcraft on PC's - without the music, it just wasn't there.

we have developed a music engine specific for this type of purpose, and, we have managed to get an original warcraft midi playing - its a pity this engine doesn't include music; it isn't really much of an 'sacrafice' of cpu power if implemented correctly.

hopefully they'll put music in soon! we have played with the game, and, its great otherwise.

I don't know if anybody else noticed:
1) Jog dial support is b-b-broken. I jogged down on one screen & my whole NX70V locked up. Had to hit the reset (soft).
2) Sound craps out with multiple units selected/commanded.

Actually, I know others have seen item 2. I also think $30 is a bit high, but not so unreasonable that I won't consider it. It will just take me quite a while to complete the consideration process.

Overall, I think it is a great game.

Tip DS

Way worth $30

ignatius @ 9/12/2003 10:10:16 PM #
I'm really impressed with the strategy aspect of this game. By level 5 (out of 20), you need to develop a thoughtful strategy to get through it.

This is not only the PDA game of the year, it's the most dynamic PDA game ever. I'm nearly conviced could port Warcraft or Age of Myth to PDAs given enough storage space.

Warfare is way worth the 30 bucks. Even though the existing missions seem to have high replayability, Handmark is coming out with an SDK to allow 3rd party expansion missions.

BTW, Handmark has a message board...
