PalmSource today announced the number of Palm Powered devices sold worldwide has surpassed 30 million. The company also announced today the formation of a German online software store.
30 Million Palm OS Devices Sold The Palm OS platform has attracted a large and loyal following with more than 275,000 developers building applications for Palm Powered mobile devices. The Palm OS developer community has created over 19,000 software applications in a broad range of categories including, Web browsers, email and Internet communications, sales force and field automation, personal productivity, groupware, financial management and games. These solutions are designed to increase the value to the end user by offering customization of Palm Powered devices and help expand the market for our licensees' products and services. "PalmSource's strategy is designed to drive innovation in the handheld and smartphone markets, while maintaining ease of use," said David Nagel, president and chief executive officer of PalmSource. "We believe users benefit from the advantages of Palm OS because it lets them manage their lives and pursue individual interests, whether making calls, accessing corporate email, listening to music, snapping a picture, or checking the Internet. We believe licensees and developers appreciate having a platform that gives them the flexibility to create unique Palm Powered devices that have features tailored to different types of customers."

The PDA market is too slow for any PPC edition to sell 30 million units. Make that 31 million units, since the run rate is about 1 million new PalmOS units per quarter and whatever new edition the FUD machine is hyping isn't even out yet. To much beer at the Oktoberfest??????
Probably some "palmboys" got to muchbeer at the Munich palmsource over the weekend. This should have been done two years ago! Now although the Germans started 1 year ago to PPC like the Amerikans two years ago. At this time you will very hard find any PalmOS devices but many PPC`s in the big consumerelectronic stores. Two years ago it has been oposite. When I ask the sales rep in the stores, they tell me, PPC is just cheaper and easier to sell. The same icture is when you see Best Buy or Comp USA. RE: Palm is Dead

Gawd yet another "Palm is Dead" story. Well, the guy that wrote this post obviously doesn't know jack about Microsoft and now the now renamed Mobile Systems Division is a second or third class citizen in the MS empire. The best people in the MS corp. refuse to work there and with that, nothing good is coming out of it. This "chromed" edition is a chromed turd if you ask me. They have no ability to dump 30 million units on the market. In fact, the market cannot absorb this amount even in the smart phone business. Keep on dreaming. Talking about dreaming ... ... in 2001, Jeff Hawkins was killed in an automobile accident and so the Palm OS could continue, a look alike for Jeff was found and he now has been working to merge Handspring into Palm SG for the past year. However the OS engineers at PalmSource knows the real story and have placed clues in the OS 5.2 release. There are a collection of "Jeff is dead" clues all over the OS if you know how to search for them. He he. RE: Palm is Dead

LOL!! Yes, yes, "PPC ChromedEdition" is merely a totem that I *thought* summed up my negative opinion about PPC without re-writing the essay we've all suffered through a million times before. Maybe I should have said "PPC TailFinEdition", or shortened, "PPC XP TF 3.0 Mobile".... Thanks for the yuks!

The Palm Powered licensee community currently includes 14 mobile device manufacturers: Aceeca, AlphaSmart, Fossil, Garmin, GSL, Handspring, HuneTec, Kyocera, Lenovo, Palm Solutions Group, Samsung, Sony, Symbol and Tapwave. Were they just trying to avoid having thirteen? RE: Unlucky numbers.

Palm Source is still currently a division of the company Palm Inc. In the very near future Palm Source will be it's own company.
How many of those 30 million devices are still in use?
I just wonder among those 30 million devices, how many are still in active? That's the major question for software developers. Palm has been around for such a long time, some of the devices, such as PalmPilot, should already be retired. If we exclude those retired devices, how many active Palm users are still there? Personally I have 4 Palm devices already, and two of them are still in use. Tony RE: How many of those 30 million devices are still in use?
I have 10 and three in use. Because already you need three to run (test) all softwares. One with 3.5 one with 4.xx and one with 5.xx. Same b...sh... as I have had 4 years ago with MS CE 2.xx. Now itīs opposide: One PPC runs all.........
This will be the end of PalmOS!!!!!!! And the future of PPC!!!!!!!! Bill Gates has learnd his lesson!!!!!!
