PalmSource Announces MobileWorld Initiative

PalmSouce has announced the launch of the Palm Powered MobileWorld program. The new program connects mobile operators, infrastructure providers and software developers in a wireless ecosystem that capitalizes on the growing smartphone market.

The Palm Powered MobileWorld program consists of two key elements. The first element of the Palm Powered MobileWorld program is designed to make Palm OS the most service-ready platform for smart mobile devices by providing leading mobile operators the opportunity to collaborate with PalmSource to integrate their feedback and requirements into the Palm OS platform development efforts. The second element enables leading mobile operators to work closely with PalmSource to create a select catalog of software titles for over-the-air (OTA) delivery to Palm Powered™ smartphones. This MobileWorld catalog will draw from over 20,000 Palm OS software titles tailored to the consumer and enterprise markets, giving mobile operators the opportunity to increase average revenue and average margin per user by selling Palm Powered smart mobile devices with a MobileWorld catalog of software applications

Announced separately today, Sprint is the first charter mobile operator partner in the Palm Powered MobileWorld program. PalmSource and Sprint will collaborate to provide the wireless business solutions for Sprint's Palm Powered PCS Vision Smart Device customers. The agreement underlines Sprint's commitment to Palm OS, a leading platform in the mobile market and reinforces PalmSource's goal to become the platform leader in the smartphone market.

"Palm Powered MobileWorld is a key strategic initiative designed to ignite the growth of the new wireless Palm economy," said David Nagel, president and chief executive officer of PalmSource, Inc. "We believe that this program creates a tremendous revenue-generating opportunity for mobile operators, infrastructure providers and software developers. Palm Powered MobileWorld also makes it easier for customers to purchase wireless Palm OS applications over-the-air from their Palm Powered smartphone, changing the whole user experience of buying and installing applications on smart mobile devices."

Palm Powered MobileWorld provides the 275,000-strong Palm OS developer community technical support and marketing resources to build and promote wireless applications through the new PalmSource software store, announced separately today. Under this program, PalmSource will test software applications for ease of over-the-air download from the new software store to Palm Powered smart mobile devices. Palm Powered MobileWorld offers Palm OS developers an additional revenue stream and increased exposure for their wireless applications to mobile operators worldwide.

Palm Powered MobileWorld also offers mobile infrastructure partners additional distribution channels into the wireless market. Infrastructure providers that are charter members of the Palm Powered MobileWorld program include: PalmGear, powering the new PalmSource software store; Good Technology, Mobilitec, Pinpoint, Pumatech, Visto, and WideRay , enabling the delivery of wireless Palm OS applications through beaming stations in operator retail stores.

Good!

RhinoSteve @ 11/17/2003 8:29:13 PM #
This is a very nice consolidation of what was a hodgepodge of wireless standard support into a single accessable source. Also, this screams of a next generation of WiFi / Bluetooth / whatever embedded wireless devices.

PS: First post -- woohoo!!

True. The next generation of wireless is UWB (ultra wide band). It uses nearly the entire radio spectrum at very low power (to avoid interference) and will offer speeds in excess of 100 MBPS. (Nearly 10 times faster than Wi-Fi, and more than 100 times faster than Bluetooth.) At those speeds the possibilities are limitless.

Coming soon to a store near you.

Bill's plans

I wonder if this could put a dent at all in Bill's plans.

Bill's plan? I think it goes like this.

1) Relabel the Win32 kernel and port it to the faddish, low-power processor of the year.
2) Shove the ROM image down hardware manufacturer's throats. Tell them to "deal with it!"
3) Throw parties and give out a couple thousand units as promos to developers and editors.
4) Keep a couple dozen employees working full time calling editors to tell them "Palm is dead in 18 months."
5) Get a handful of Internet trolls to post and quote articles written by these editors.
6) Change the handheld API just enough to break about 75% of the shipping MS handheld apps since the new processor doesn't support the old APIs.
7) Negelect the handheld space to deal with other parts of the company that makes money.
8) See the latest run of MS handhelds not sell since Palm expands license base and price drops to one third below HS handheld units.
9) Blame the handheld division director. Fire them as a scapegoat.
10) Go to step 1.

And the beat goes one.

Sometimes they wise up and just resign!

Buzzword compliance

nuxi @ 11/18/2003 4:29:12 PM #
I about lost my lunch after reading the first sentence of this article.

"The new program connects mobile operators, infrastructure providers and software developers in a wireless ecosystem that capitalizes on the growing smartphone market."

*BARF*

This whole article could be condensed to three sentences:
* Smartphone developers can work with PalmSource to ensure PalmOS works on their devices. (This is news?)
* PalmSource will offer wireless software downloads to PalmOS smartphones in conjunction with wireless carriers.
* Sprint will be the first carrier to offer these wireless downloads.

Man, I freakin' hate buzzwords.

Now how about that Tungsten E review? I'd much rather read that than an obvious copy of a press release from Palm.

Buzzword Bingo may be making a comeback soon.

Palm PressreleaseCenter.com?

Hippocrates @ 11/19/2003 1:17:27 AM #
Lets's get back to some real articles, reviews info leaks and discussion. These press releases have gone from bad to worse. If there's no news, do a hardware review (Tapwave, Tungsten E, the new Zire, a roundup of cases, a comparison to some PPC devices, the Treo 600, the new keyboards, etc.) or some software reviews (file managers, wordprocessing software, alarm clocks, datebook replacements, calcultors, personal finance software, etc.).

That's the kind of stuff that would generate useful discussion. Regurgitating the latest doublespeak from Palm and other manufacturers makes it look like there's no editorial content here. If you're going to post press releases as "news", at least label them as press releases so people know to ignore them. This reminds me of what happened to Palmstation before it died. Most of the other Palm sites seem to be crap now.

Recruit some writers and testers. Yeah it's work putting out good content, but who else is doing it?

I'm sorry to see you felt you had to delete my account. Good luck and I hope you're able to eventually get things back on track here. Remember - you can't expect to run this site singlehandedly. Ask for some help from some of the regulars. Ben Combee to do some technical writing. Hoplites to do a PPC article. Well...maybe not...

ska at leasts post and stimulates discussion. The posting here is almost completely dead most days. What happened to the lively discussions that used to occur at PIC?

Admin @ 11/20/2003 11:08:53 AM #
there are lively discussions here everyday. I am working on much behind the scenes. I don't see you doing anything but posting lies, insulting people and complaining.

why don't you write an article explaining your troll posting motivations?

???

Strider_mt2k @ 11/19/2003 6:44:56 AM #
Is it just me, or were there comments posted here that have been removed?
I could have sworn I saw stuff here that's gone now.

I do have to moderate the forums, and 99% of the time it is for a double post of deleting some ska lie and or insult.

I have a very hands off moderation approach and there are some trolls who abuse that, thus the deleted comments.
