Deluxware's Weather App Graduates from Beta

Deluxware WeatherAfter a good amount of time in beta testing, Deluxeware has released v1.0 of its new Weather application for Palm OS devices. Weather is a personal weather station that can show you current conditions and 14-day forecasts for nearly anywhere on the globe. A rich set of graphics, custom backgrounds, auto updates and a added, skinnable "weather-guard" lock screen addition make give this app a few unique touches. The program also support high-res+ on large screen handhelds.

Weather v1.00 is available now. It is compatible with Palm OS 5 and above. The program is sold on a subscription basis. The infinite subscription is available for $19.95 (currently on sale for $17.95 for a limited time). A one-year subscription is available for $14.95, and a 3 month for $4.95.

So much for being Freeware as they've been pushing their beta's the last 6 months. I don't have a problem charging for it, just the fact that they misrepresented that it was freeware all this time. I know CorePlayer did the same but at least their freeware version is still usable. I had no problem buying CorePlayer. The same is not true for this application.

Pacman,

Are not betas often freeware, and then for sale at v1 release? I have no problem with this practice, especially if they leave the beta around giving you a choice.

This is a very nice web-client app. I tried it when Ryan ran it's beta around here a while back. My only complaint and the the reason that I tossed it was that it had only "today" weather data and no forecast. I was miffed b/c I could walk to the door faster than my Treo 680 v2.11 + EDGE could lag it's way to today's weather. :-)

Now that it has a forecast, it should be really nice. One that would make you make a buying decision. It is very well put together and snappy.

It's true that betas of commercial software are often free but usually they warn you when that the final version will not be free. Basically, they got their users (myself included) hooked with a very nice application and are now demanding payment for it to continue using it. While it's certainly a common enough sales technique, it still feels like cheating when it is employed.

Silly idea. They are charging for data from another service (accuweather, for example) that is free.

Anyone know of something similar, but free?

KMeteo downloads a weather forecast but is nowhere near as pretty, automated, as nice, or as easy to use as Deluxeware's Weather App. But it is free.

I have been unsuccessful in getting a response from DeluxeWare to this question: Is the KeyGuard function an option, or is it the only mode in which the program will run?

Answered my own question: downloaded trial version, and the first screen offered keyguard as an option... or not! So, no problem.
