Palm Hires Apple's Former Head of Mac PR

Silicon Valley gossip blog Valleywag is reporting that Palm has hired Lynn Fox, the former head of Mac PR at Apple. A company representative has confirmed to PalmInfocenter that Lynn Fox is indeed the new VP or Public Relations at Palm. This would mark the second major hiring away of a prominent Apple employee since Jon Rubenstein has taken over as Chairmen of Palm Inc.

The last high profile Apple employee to join Palm was Mike Bell who joined Palm as their new SVP of product development. Bell came to Palm after a 16 year tenure at Apple, where he was a vice president in the Macintosh Hardware Division.

What sort of frontal lobe damage would it take to make this career move seem smart?

It's an interesting commentary on the Me-Too Media that none of these "Palm poaches Apple Employee" articles note the dates that the employees LEFT Apple.

I mean...you know...if someone leaves a company and a year later gets hired by another company have they REALLY been "poached"?

Sheesh.

I'm pretty certain that Mike Bell, at least, went directly from Apple to Palm. As far as motivation goes, I can't speak to that on his behalf. Perhaps it's an indication of just how "devoted" some of Steve's employees are to his "You're a rock-star! You're a moron!" style of management.

Mike's a very good guy, I reported to him for a while at Apple when we were doing the Common Hardware Reference Platform project-I was the networking architect on that. (Steve killed CHRP pretty much the instant he got back in '97. I got a nice custom Berke Breathed Bloom County CHRP Project t-shirt with Opus and the Banana Jr. 9000 out of it, so it wasn't a total loss...)

SV, apparently she left within the last 30-45 days or so. Here name was on the Jan 30, 2008 press release for the MBA.

Hehehe... my thoughts exactly.

I can't imagine what kind of pitch you have to give to anyone to make that career switch. Even if you are fed up with your actual job at Apple, jumping to Palm will most certainly damage your CV in the long run...

PR: He'd Better Be Good!

LiveFaith @ 3/29/2008 12:24:10 PM # Q
This guy had better be good or he may soon hate his job. PR Director for Palm may require the skills of "Baghdad Bob" in the months to come.

Let's see now. Jump to December 08'. It may go something like this ...

"The greatest mobile platform of all time is ready to explode onto the corporate and consumer landscapes. It is coupled with the most technological, ergonomic, attractive, and powerful hardware in the history of mankind.

All the major carriers, foreign and domestic are begging us for a place at the table. The infidels at Apple, Nokia, HTC, RIM, and others are all preparing for a soon departure from the smartphone and communicator markets because they fear retribution from the mighty Nova.

All Palm OS software ever written in the past decade will run seamlessly on our new devices including the Foleo II. The infidels from Redmond are already working feverishly to creating software to allow WM apps to run on the dominant Nova platform. All the others will soon be phased out.

All this will happen really really soon. Do not believe the fabricated statements from all those carriers who say they will pass on Nova devices. Go ahead and get your data backed up. You will be able to make the switch real real soon.

Good day."

... or something like that. :-/

Pat, first he is a she. Second, she has worked at Lucasfilms, Google and Apple. THree, while I think it may be too late for Palm regardless of how good Nova is, lets see how they handle the next 9-12 months. The corporate set does not appear to love touchscreen typing as much as I thought and BB seems to be having some increasing server issues and not so much love from the 3rd part dev community. The game is not over yet.

3 good points. I hang around hoping that past performance is truly no indication of future expectations from Palm. I guarantee she'll earn every penny PRing for Palm. Here's hoping against hope that Nova salvages the platform.

Palm should hire...

jca666us @ 3/29/2008 9:02:32 PM # Q
Steve Jobs - he loves taking on hopeless causes (Apple in 1997).

Hell, even Steve Jobs wouldn't take a job at Palm...they're swirling down the drain at this point.

TooMuch @ 3/30/2008 7:39:42 PM # Q
Steve Jobs motivation to take back Apple was primarily because his baby (Apple) was taken from him. You are severely misguided on this one.

(Of course his upstart neXt computers thing played a big role (ala OSX)...as did the bazillion$ to finance from the Pixar success venture (from $10million to $2billion).)

PR Manager??

drbuzz0 @ 3/30/2008 5:46:13 PM # Q
Does Palm honestly think their problem is that they don't have good PR Management? Their bad PR is because they have not come out with any kind of even slightly exciting product since the Treo 650.

PR can get you only so far and even if a good PR manager could get people to somehow think they want to buy Palm products, I really don't see how this guy is well suited for it

He comes from apple and is going to Palm. His experience is in marketing and PR for products which are *good* to begin with and the biggest problem is that they might not live up to the company's recent history of exciting and new products. At Palm, he's dealing with products that nobody wants to begin with and completely lack any support, innovation or excitement.
