Freedom Mini GPS Receiver

Freedom Mini GPS SatnavThe Freedom Mini GPS is a new micro sized bluetooth gps satnav receiver available in the PIC accessory store. The Freedom Mini is so small it can be carried around in your pocket attached to your keychain. It weights a miniscule 1.06 ounces (30g). It utilizes the latest SiRF Star III chipset for greater accuracy and speed and works with all popular mapping and navigation software currently available. It is compatible with any PDA or smartphone with Bluetooth technology and comes with a USB and car charger for recharging at home or on the road.

The Freedom Mini GPS is available now for $89.95 USD. Shipping charges begin at $5.95 for most US and Canadian orders. This unit does not include GPS software, so you would need to have or purchase a mapping solution such as TomTom.

T3?

Well considering TomTom assumes Palm = Treo, what GPS software these days works with the T3? And would this bugger work with the T3?

I saw it last week, but I couldn't find any info about it working with PalmOS. I was looking at using it with my TX and software from Navizon. Navizon has a deal where you can use it for free if you have a BT GPS, but I didn't research the fine print.

Hmmmm the Garmin Mobile 10 for POS supports the TX (at least) in addition to the Treos and I think it even supports 320x480 screen resolutions. In fact, it received another version update just 2 weeks ago!

I've always been curious about it (since I've begun feeling recently that the POS version of TomTom Navigator is sort of a half-hearted efffort anyway) but haven't seen much discussion of it online.

This sounds like ideal fodder for a future review vs. TomTom6!

P.S. I recently read somewhere that TT was going to cancel all of their "PDA/smartphone" add-on software devlopment (they've alrady stated they will not support WM6) in favor of their own branded dedicated unit solutions. They also might be working on a TomTom GPS-enabled phone (see last month's news item).

Other than Garmin and TeleNav, the pickings are pretty slim if you want a TomTom alternative. Mapopolis is dead now and has barely inching along for the past several years.

I've used and setup TomTom v5 on a Zire 72 and Tungsten T5... Kris didn't you get the latest v6 working with your Palm TX?

Oops nevermind about Navizon, no native POS client.. There is a java version... I'll just shut up now.

Well, I *DID* get it working but it frequently crashes due to not being optimized for the TX (and maybe some Treo-specific system calls?). There's a good thread on Brighthand about some people experimenting with some of Dmitry Grinberg's apps (UnCache & UDMH) to help boost TT6's stability on the T6.

The TX versions runs but you've got to very carefully watch your cache/heap sizes and be prepared to put up with frequent & random resets. It's worse when you are in fullscreen mode and/or have wi-fi on. And toggling from full-screen to 320x320 mode really made it prone to crash. So, yes, in short TT6 works on the TX but just barely and not very stable...

FYI, TT5 works great on both the T5, LifeDrive, and TX (I've personally used it on T5 & TX).

Back to TT6: TomTom & Palm support were both non-committal on saying anything other than repeating the supported device list (Treo 650, 700p, 700w/wx). Then TomTom 6 6.03 added support for the Treo 750 and 680. The 755p so far remains officially unsupported. No word on the Centro or 500v either at this point.

I figure Palm will issue a new bundle down the road but with a microSD card w/ mini and fullsize SD adapter cards. Either that or just not certify the Cerntro & 500v as being GPS-compatible for their own solutions.

It seems to be hit and miss with the TX. I have been running TT6 for nearly a year and it has only crashed once. A friend of mine has no problems either. I am using uncache, he is not.

It also runs perfectly on my T3 and does not crash.

Disconcerting hardware to software ratio?

I think it's quite a telling sign of the times that there are so many Palm units (both Garnet PDAs, Treos, & WM Treos) with standard Bluetooth and so many quality little GPS receivers. Yet there are SO FEW decent/modern Palm OS GPS software packages out there to actually utilize these little receivers!
