U.S. Reseller Needed for axxPac

Posted By: Ed on Wednesday, May 10, 2000 8:40:45 AM

The axxPac is now shipping. However, no reseller in the U.S. has stepped forward to sell the device, which lets Palm III series handhelds use SmartMedia cards. Their site lists resellers in Germany, Japan, Malaysia, and the Czech republic. The only response to a request to buy the device directly was an e-mail pointing out that they are still searching for a reseller in this country.

If you are interested in becoming a reseller for the axxPac, you should contact the company.

I believe the axxPac is designed to work only with the
(discontinued by Palm) IIIx. Is that not true?

They also have plans to support adding the expansion connector to IIIe's so they too can make use of this product.

I have heard that the IIIxe is the same motherboard as the IIIx and IIIe, but like the IIIe has no connector. >>>IF<<< true, then the same mods can make the current models available for this product too!

Can anyone verify that these products all share the same motherboard?

The company says that they can install the axxPac on a Palm IIIe, Palm IIIxe, and one of the IBM Workpads. Here's a list from their site:

Oops, I left off the obvious one: Palm IIIx.

I brought this up for one simple reason: I really want one of these. Am I working alone here? Is there anyone else out there that is interested? If so, I have a couple of suggestions. Write to your favorite on-line reseller (like Beyond.com) asking them to carry the axxPac. Also, ask the axxPac people to sell the thing directly. Heck, they could auction them all off on eBay and keep the profits for themselves instead of splitting them with a reseller.

Just my opinion.

I am also interested in, have recently been following, this product. At $80, it seems like quite a deal. The only two concerns I have are: 1. app compatibility to read directly from the SmartMedia card. The latest developments are that CSpotRun (which I use for my Docs) has a software driver for this (see http://www.ams-fl.com/axxpac/e_index.html" CLASS=NEWS>http://www.ams-fl.com/axxpac/e_index.html) and an axxPac JPG viewer is available. If more app developers (espec. of PeanutReader, AvantGo, AlbumToGo) build in support for the axxPac, I'll go for it. 2.) Future support for larger denominations of SmartMedia. I haven't read that much about SmartMedia, but have seen enough to understand there may be some compatibility problems moving from say 32MB to 64MB.

Another possible avenue for mass storage on the IIIx is the Microdrive.. I don't know what offerings of this there are/will be for the IIIx, but I remember seeing one that attaches to the serial connector (talk about ugly!!)

I am seriously considering moving from a IIIx to a TRGPro, but am waiting to see what happens with axxPAC and other possible IIIx retro-fits.

You're not working alone...but I would guess many are also playing the wait-and-see game as well. By the time I am ready to buy, hopefully AMS will be selling direct or there will be a a US reseller...
