Thanks for the pics. Is it just me, or does "Access Powered" not have the same ring to it as "Palm Powered"?

Oh well, small niggle. I'll still be buying a GSM one, if it ever eventuates.

How about "No GSM Access"

RE: Access denied
Ryan @ 5/17/2006 2:38:26 PM # Q
or how about... "No Wi-Fi Access" for you.

Also, an ACCESS splash screen is the first thing you see when it boots, then the orange Palm logo.

"Wi-Fi Access Denied"

Remember that VR sequence in the movie Lawnmower Man (the Pierce Brosnan one)? "Access Denied, Access Denied, Access Denied, Access Granted!"

"By the year 2001, there won't be a person on this planet who isn't hooked into it, and hooked into me."

Ah, we were all so naive in the early 90's...

"He learned Latin in two hours."

"You realize, Dr. Angelo, that I have surpassed your intelligence."

Great movie. I remember when I first got a broadband connection, I felt like the Lawnmower Man when he starts buzzing through and soaking up all that data at crazy speeds.

Palm CEO Ed Colligan says on Bloomberg TV this weekend that a GSM Treo will be out later this year.

The interview is airing ~47 minutes after the hour, every hour, Saturday & Sunday afternoon (5/20 & 5/21). You can see Bloomberg TV on cable or satellite TV, or streamed from the bloomberg.com website.

So what happens in game mode with the Home button? Is that no longer a possibility?

Good question. Also, the new positioning of the File button sucks big-time, but I suppose you don't hit it *that* often.

Nice comp pics

Thanks for the comparison pictures. It is certainly evolution rather than revolution (thankfully!). I agree though with many potential users though, I will wait for the GSM version. CMDA is okay but for flexibility I want to have my SIM card able to switch out to an old phone if the Treo 'falls off the twig' for a while. Nice piece of work though.

Maybe

Tuckermaclain @ 5/17/2006 9:39:30 AM # Q
Looking at those two stacked up reminds me of the Jethro Tull song "Thick as a brick." Maybe it would be worth getting this to decrease by 1 the number of things I lug around. I really have become fond of my Tx's screen, though. I was playing with a Z-22 last week and really don't like that tiny square screen. I wonder if I can get a good BT hookup between my Tx and that Samsung phone Sprint sells that looks like the Razr?

hkklife @ 5/17/2006 11:11:48 PM # Q
TX & LifeDrive--all Palms released since the T|E2 do not natively support DUN via BT with CDMA handsets. Palm has never released a PhoneLink Update or driver for a CDMA handset. Even the box of the TX states that a GSM BT handset is required for DUN connections.

TINY upgrade

interlard @ 5/17/2006 10:39:20 AM # Q
After such a long wait since the 650 came out, the 700p is really just a small change. Different buttons, more memory, same brick.

Can they not make these things a bit smaller? Windows Mobile phones are tiny by comparrison, yet the 700w does the same thing at twice the size & weight.

Come on, Palm!

RE: TINY upgrade
VCamm @ 5/17/2006 11:44:52 AM # Q
Well it is a pda. Making them too small diminishes it's appeal as a pda. I don't want them to go no smaller, at least not the screen.

RE: TINY upgrade
Rome @ 5/17/2006 1:23:16 PM # Q
EVDO is probably the most significant upgrade, which you forgot to mention.

Windows Mobile Smartphone-based devices are probably smaller, but WM Pocket PC-based devices are certainly not. Ever seen a HTC Universal?

RE: TINY upgrade
AdamaDBrown @ 5/17/2006 1:38:35 PM # Q
In fairness, those WM phones you refer to lack a touchscreen, and most of them don't have a full keyboard either. The WM devices which do have a touchscreen and keyboard are Treo sized.

RE: TINY upgrade
joad @ 5/18/2006 3:09:06 PM # Q
...Treo sized- or bigger. Windows Mobile has a few nice features, but not anywhere near enough to make it a decent smartphone OS compared to Palm/AccessOS.

The Treo is a compromise between a PDA (usable keyboard/visible screen) and a cell phone (the tinier the better - you just gotta see the phone number).

Hawkins and crew did a hell of a job finding the middle ground - wish the size were smaller, but wish the screen were bigger... I don't yet see a way with present technology to make both sides happy - but if I were on the Palm design crew I would certainly be on the cutting edge of seeking out solutions to this holy grail. Since buying out Handspring it seems Palm hasn't devoted much energy to this area, which they shouldn't when they weren't even putting enough memory into the devices. Maybe with the 700p finally out they will find some money to finally continue the innovation that they purchased 3 years ago from Handspring.

RE: TINY upgrade
hkklife @ 5/18/2006 4:31:43 PM # Q
This is easily possible:

Take a basic Treo formfactor, make the screen a tad larger and 320*480, drop the QWERTY keyboard in favor of the standard four row, twelve button keyboard and you're set.

OR...take a TX/TE formfactor, make the screen a tad SMALLER but retain 320*480, beef up the battery and do whatever it takes to shoehorn a GSM radio into it. Heck, go with MicroSD if that helps.

Or simply keep the existing TX and replace Wi-fi and Bluetooth with a cellular radio and give it a beefier non-removable battery in the process.

The T|C design could even be used for such a purpose.

I think what a lot of people are looking for is a "connectivity anywhere" cellular DATA only device that omits voice functionality entirely. The T|W was on the right track but Palm crippled it with OS 4.2, a Dragonball CPU and the lame halfarsed voice functionality.

Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their profits.

Hahahahahahaha... you cannot be serious? You are baseing the size of a Windows Mobile Pocket PC device on the Universal? The device that has a clamshell-landscape formfactor, a 6 (Yes, six!) row keyboard with 62 keys, a 1.3megapixel still camera, a separate video/web cam facing the user, a 640X480 VGA color screen, a full sized 3.5mm headphone jack, two ports for an external GSM and WCDMA antenna, stereo speakers (which brings the total speakers to 3 when you include the ear piece speaker, a swivel hinge allowing you to go from clamshell/laptop mode to PDA mode, etc.

That is what you base your size on? Give me a break. Ever seen an HTC Wizard? An Apache? Both will give the Treo a run for the money and both have bigger keyboards and bigger screens. Your comparison is as ridiculious as if someone said a PalmOS device is large, sluggish and heavy because the LifeDrive exists. (insert rolling eye emoticon here)

Pity that with all that hardware they couldn't find a place to put EDGE or the 850 MHz band.

Well, it is designed for Europe. They would put that in if a US Carrier decided they wanted to carry it.

I believe you call us 'Brits' if that helps to jog the memory

Palm CEO Ed Colligan told Bloomberg TV that there will be a "European" targeted Treo to be released later this year... and it will run on GSM.

You can see this interview on the afternoons of Saturday, May 20 & Sunday, May 21, on Bloomberg TV-US, every hour ~45 minutes after the hour. It also available on-demand right now via the Bloomberg terminal.

About Verizon, US Cellular, et. al...

vesther @ 5/17/2006 5:17:02 PM # Q
Verizon better dump the 700w in favor of the 700p. If not, then I can pretty much swear that I'm not gonna ever come back to Verizon come my time to upgrade phones once again. Now about US Cellular, it's been quite a while since they last had a smartphone device, how about US Cellular to have a Treo 700p?

T-Mobile is still at large. I hope that T-Mobile will release a Treo 700p sooner or later, as a T-Mobile-branded 650 was all for naught after all. I'd better see the 700p surpass the 700w, as I'd rather see the Access-powered side flourish more.

Powered by Palm OS since March 2002

fierywater @ 5/18/2006 12:10:55 AM # Q
Verizon won't dump the 700w, it's quite a good seller. They'll carry the 700p in addition to it. Though I can imagine the nightmares Verizon will have teaching their sales drones to differentiate between the two for customers.

I don't know if you'll see a GSM 700w or 700p, per se; I think you're more likely to see an similar model sans the external antenna.

Just can't get into "smartphones", sorry. I can't bring myself to lug around a phone that is 36% heavier and 54% bigger than my existing one (Motorola V635). And no GSM is definitely a deal-breaker.

Now, if Palm would introduce an upgrade to the T3, then I might be interested.

480x320 Display

Gekko @ 5/18/2006 9:49:24 PM # Q

I'd love to see a 480x320 Display with switchable Orientation to Landscape (Sideways). Surfing the web at 320x320 is functional but painful.

stanner91 @ 5/22/2006 8:22:41 PM # Q
I'll state it again: I would love to see a treo with as slider screen as with the Tungsten T3. Unlike other smartphones where the keyboard slides and only works when extended, the keyboard would be accessible the entire time but the screen could be extended when being used more as a PDA rather than a phone. I find this incredibly useful on the T3.

And it also has a landscape mode...drool.
