Posted By: Ryan on Tuesday, December 05, 2006 12:19:28 PM

Palm Canada today announced the availability of the Palm Treo 680 smartphone, on Rogers Wireless, Canada's largest and clearest integrated wireless voice and data network. The 680 is available for $299.99 CAD when purchased with a three-year voice and data service agreement.

Palm Treo 680"As Canada's leading wireless carrier, operating on Canada's only GSM network, we are proud to offer our customers leading-edge mobile devices like the Palm Treo 680. Email availability on a stylish, thin form factor will make the Treo 680 particularly appealing to small and medium-size businesses by enabling them to save time by having access to outstanding mobile innovation and email connectivity," said John Boynton, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Rogers Wireless.

With the introduction of the Palm OS based Treo 680 smartphone, Palm is targeting new users in the rapidly growing smartphone and feature-phone markets. Market research firm In-Stat, estimates that 25 per cent of all wireless handsets worldwide will be smartphones by 2011. Research conducted by Palm suggests a substantial population of feature-phone users have not purchased smartphones, fearing they were too expensive and too difficult to use.

The Treo 680 is powered by Palm OS Garnet v5.4.9. It runs a 312 MHz Intel processor and has 64MB of user available storage memory and 64MB of SDRAM. The screen is a 320 x 320 pixel color touch-screen display. The 680 features a full size SD slot for memory expansion. It has a slimmer 1200 mAh rechargeable battery for up to 4 hours talk time. Bluetooth v1.2 wireless and IR are included as well as a VGA digital camera.

The Treo 680 also can be purchased at Palm Canada's online store for $499 CAD in four colours - crimson, copper, arctic and graphite.

 A little expensive

$299 CAD = about $260 USD. I see it can be had for only $199 USD with a two year contract in the US?

Rogers wants $349- $50 rebate plus 3 year voice/email plan at minimum $60 per month. You get 200 anytime minutes and count 'em, 7 (seven) whole MB of data. Add $6.95 system acces fee, $0.50 911 fee, 14% tax = $76.89. Add voice mail, caller ID, text messages sent for $12 more, then you're up to over $90 per month x 36 months = $3240 for barebones service. Yikes!

At least they dropped the price of the 650 to $199, even though you can get it at Bell And Telus for $49

A little? LOL It is a ripoff. That's ONE of the reasons I will not buy a Treo.

Bell is almost just as bad.
They can shove their voice and data plans up their *censored*.
