Staples Black Friday Tungsten E2 & TX Deals

Palm Tungten E2 HandheldThe evergreen Tungsten E2, now newly repackaged and rebranded in some retail outlets, is going to be a Staples "Black Friday" blowout sales item. According to leaked black Friday newspaper circulars, the E2 is to be priced at $148.99 which is at over $50 less than its standard MSRP. No word if Staples is selling the bare E2 package or the "Essentials" pack which includes a few free extras such as screen protectors, a case and a spare stylus. As an added incentive, Staples is also giving away a free keyboard with mail-in rebate with purchase of the E2. The ad is unclear which brand or model or keyboard is being offered but a likely candidate is the Palm Universal IR wireless keyboard since the MSRP matches that mentioned in the ad.

The Tungsten E2 is Palm's oldest current handheld model, dating back to April 2005. It features Bluetooth wireless connectivity, OS 5.4.7, a 320x320 color screen, and Palm Wi-Fi SDIO card compatability.

In addition to the E2 offer, the Palm TX, featuring built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a 320x480 screen and Palm OS 5.4.9 will be on sale for $249.99, down from its regular price of $299.99. The TX is unfortunately exempt from Staples' mail-in rebate offer. While the E2 has recently received a mild facelift in the form of new packaging and branding, the TX retains the same price and appearance since its October, 2005 launch.

Very sketchy rumors continue to occasionally circulate about an upgraded TX2 in 2007, possibly featuring a 4gb internal flash drive.

Thanks to BFads.net for the tip.

Ok, if they are working on a tx2:
My advice is to please include
-a better browser (handle big pages better- give me thumbnail images that I can click on to load completely, let me stream video)
-two sd slots
-microphone, please
-av in with a video recorder would be sweet.

Thanks

Would rather see a zire 73- same but bump memory, processor speed and add wifi

I put less faith in that than I would in the Easter Bunny. Palm has abandoned the "traditional" handheld user, and consequently, they have generally abandoned Palm or any hope in Palm.

It's sad, because I really loved my Palm units. Each one of them had something about them that I really appreciated, that stood out (with the exception of T5). Now, if you want a "traditional" Palm, you need to step to the back of the technology bus, where the 2+ year old technology resides. Sad.

Better browser - agreed
One SD slot - for slimness
Microphone - agreed
A/V in using Multi-Connector or SDIO - agreed

Some other items that are necessary, in order of priority:

Crash-proof Palm OS 5.9.9.9.9...
Improved battery life
More memory
Lighter and slimmer
Bluetooth 1.2 or 2.0, 802.11n wi-fi (depending on release date)
640 x 480 screen, 16.7 million colors
Native decoding of AAC, MPEG-4, and other next-gen media files (H.264 probably too power-intensive)
Eliminate infra-red port
Do not add camera

Add those, implement them well, and Palm has my money. Otherwise, I get a new battery for my m505. My new Nokia cell phone is really sweet... ;o)

It needs to be heavier, not lighter. It feels like a cardboard mailing box. It needs to have a metal case. I refuse to buy a T|X to replace my Palm Vx, as the T|X looks and feels like a cheap piece of crap.

If it only had a better browser, an SD slot and a microphone ... plus maybe a 320x320 screen and way to sync with my computer. But it's got a full keyboard, a one line printer, and if it's like mine, the battery life is great!

Don't forget the exp cards!

If you don't mind Sandisk, 1GB SD cards for $15 and 2GB SD cards for $30. Both were available w/o requiring rebates. Something to keep in mind for next year.

Bummer how the Staples I went to only had 5 GPS units on sale.
