700p

I'm bringing this forward from my comment on the previous article regarding 700wx through Alltel.

What about 700p?

I'm impressed with how Alltel is rolling out EVDO all over the country. Was hoping they'd offer the 700p as well. Has anybody heard if this is on the horizon?

The unofficial word on Howard Forums is that both the 700p and the Motorola Q will be available on Alltel sometime in January. Both have apparently been delayed in order to iron out software issues.

Does the 700 have wifi capabilities with alltel. I am currently with Sprint and have a 650 and cannot access wifi.

I thought I'd check out the TREO offerings on Alltel on letstalk.com.

Put in 20001 as zipcode - not in that area.

Put in 10001 as zipcode - not in that area.

Put in 90001 as zipcode - not in that area.

Put in "Chicago, IL" as "zipcode" - not in that area.

I gave up at that point.

"all over the country", eh?

The 700wx will be able to use a WiFi card. The 700p won't.

Alltel isn't quite a national provider in the way the big four are.

They have almost no presence in the northeast, very little in the midwest. They have a lot in the western states, but most of that is from buying out Western Wireless, which was hardly a technological powerhouse, so the plains states aren't exactly a high priority for upgrades.

Here, the bright blue areas are EVDO:

Not too impressive, I know. However, they do list Chicago as getting EVDO by January.

Sorry the "all over the country" comment was a bit of an overstatment. My point was that Alltel is really ramping up their EVDO network & in some smaller markets. See http://www.alltel.com/corporate/media/news/06/index.html for their news releases.

For those in Alltel's service area, it's pretty good. I've lived in NC & AR with excellent coverage.
