Palm Announces the Treo 750 for Telstra Australia

Palm today announced the Palm Treo 750 smartphone in Australia, the first Treo smartphone to take advantage of Telstra's Next G network. The Treo 750 offers the world-class Palm experience on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 and includes High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) capability.

"The Treo 750 smartphone, which was introduced first in Europe and recently in the United States, continues to grow our global customer base," said John Hartnett, senior vice president, global markets, Palm, Inc. "The Treo 750, combined with Telstra's extensive Next G mobile network and various email solutions, will be an invaluable business tool for Telstra's enterprise customers and further expand the Treo footprint in Australia."

The Treo 750 combines the hallmark Palm experience of a multifeatured mobile phone with email, messaging, web browsing and organisation software all in a new compact design. The new smartphone is HSDPA ready and comes with Microsoft's Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) for Windows Mobile 5.0, which includes Direct Push Technology and enhanced security features free and out of the box.

Treo 750v Specs
The Palm Treo 750v runs Windows Mobile 5.2 Pocket PC edition. It is powered by a 300MHz Samsung processor and has 128MB nonvolatile flash memory (60MB available for storage). The display is a 65k colour, 240 x 240 pixel touch screen. It also has integrated Bluetooth 1.2 wireless technology. It has a new side mounted mini-SD memory expansion and a 1.3 megapixel camera with 2x digital zoom. The battery is a removable 1200 mAh Lithium-ion, good for a claimed 4.5 hours GSM / 2.5 hours UMTS talk time, with 10 days standby time.

It has dimensions of 111 mm x 58 mm x 22 mm (4.4" x 2.3" x 0.8" inches) and weighs in at 154 g (5.4 ounces). The casing is slightly slimmer than the 650/700 series and the casing has a "soft touch" paint finish.

Telstra are one of the worst companies in Australia. 'Tis a shame Palm have chosen to go with them. I wonder why the Vodafone exclusive didn't apply here as well?

Telstra is expensive for voice and data. Vodafone have better, but still not great data plans. 3 have good voice plans but I am unsure of their data plans. I think that they might be similar to Vodafone but I am not sure.

I wonder if the phone will be locked to Telstra?

For comparison's sake:

Telstra: $30/month plan. Includes $25 of calls, and $5 of data. Data is charged at $22/MB (2.2c/kb), with a 22c session fee. On $40 and above plans, no session fee, and $10/MB (1c/kb). Network has HSPDA (so you can spend huge amounts of money faster).

3: $29/month plan. Includes $120 of calls, 100 minutes of 3 to 3 calls, and no data. However, data is charged at $4/mb (0.4c/kb), and no session fee. Network is getting HSPDA. 3G coverage is on 2100mhz instead of 850, so coverage is a bit worse (and not done outside major cities), but the network roams on Telstra's 2.5G network outside of 3 coverage areas. There's also a $5/month data plan that doesn't include data, but costs $1/MB, and is capped at $29 for up to 100MB.

The larger data plans start at $29/month for 100MB, there's really nothing below that. You can get a free data card by going onto one of those plans for 24 months.

I'd much rather see this phone on 3...

Well you three obviously live within the inner suburbs of a capitol city.
Speaking for those of us who live on the outer edge of Melburne and beyond and who regularly go bush, you get what you payed for.
Telstra is the only provider currently with a descent HSDPA network (I think Vodafone is the only other at this stage and its only covering a woeful part of inner Sydney) which is what this Treo is designed for.
Last time i checked (I'll admit it was a wile) didn't 3 coverage default to vodafone when it lost a 3 signal?
Don't get me wrong I wouldn't touch Bigpond with a forty foot pole and I have my phone bundled with my provider WildIT.
Not that I'd buy one WinMob sucks @$$ I know I sell them (no not for Telstra).
But its good to see they are finally getting some descent phones to take advantage of their new network.

I actually live in Regional Vic (outside of Geelong), however, I work in Geelong. We have 3 coverage in the areas surrounding my home but I live on the edge of it and sometimes it is there and other times it is not. The coverage is good where I work though.
I am pretty sure that 3 defaults to Telstra 2.5G when not in the 3 area. I think that the data plans mentioned above are only applicable when in the 3 coverage area and that higher rates would be applied outside that area. I read that once, but it was a while ago so I could be wrong.
I would also like to see 3 get the Treo phones. However, I am also not wanting to get a WinMob device. I am waiting for the next version of Palm OS to appear on devices and then I will probably hook it up to 3, assuming that this is possible.
