Shinei International is developing the porteson MP3 Player, which is expected to be available by the end of April. This device will allow users to listen to MP3 and AAC files with their m100 or m105. More details, like memory size (if any) and price, aren't yet available.

Shinei International is also working on the clipmodem 56K modem, which expected to be available by the end of March.

Handspring Opens Online Developer Marketplace

Handspring and eLance today announced the launch of an online marketplace for Handspring developers, partners, and service providers to do business with each other. The site, at www.elance.com/handspring, will focus on bringing professionals together in the areas of business strategy, Springboard module development, Palm OS software development, mechanical and industrial design, Web design and development, and graphic design.

Quickies: m500 Ethernet Cradle, SplashPhoto, OmniSky Awards

Portsmith is developing an Ethernet cradle for the m500 series that will have limited availability in April with volume availability in May/June. They aren't releasing a price yet. They are also considering models that will have built-in modems and also ones that can handle multiple handhelds.

SplashData has shipped SplashPhoto, an image viewer. It displays color and gray-scale images, which can be viewed as thumbnails, individually, or in a slide show. It costs $20.

Rumor: New Handspring Visor Edge (Updated)

Since the release of the first Handspring Visor, many have asked for a model that is comparable to the V series in size that can still run Springboards. Recently, rumors have begun to circulate that Handspring has created a prototype that fits this description called the "Edge" that will be available in the next few months.

The challenge for Handspring's design team is that the Springboard slot is just too big to fit into a super-slim handheld. According to reports from those who claim to have seen pictures, Handspring has solved this problem by creating a "sleeve" that fits around the Edge and has a Springboard slot built into it. This is similar to the sleeve for the iPaq that allows it to access peripherals.

The Week in Review

The big news last week was all about the low end of Palm's product line. Over last weekend, rumors were flying that the Palm IIIxe had been discontinued. A couple of days later, we learned it was true and that the m105 would be its replacement. Near the end of the week, we were able to release some advanced details about the m105 before it is available next week.

Quickies: Palm in Japan, Poor Security, PrintBoy Docs

Palm Inc. said today that it has more than 50% of the Japanese handheld market. Craig Will, representative director at Palm, was referring to a study by BCN, a news service run by Computer News Inc. Mr. Will also predicted that Palm's share of the Japanese market will only increase. "We've built the foundation for further growth.''

@Stake has pointed that anyone with developer tools can access data on Palm handhelds that have been locked with a password. Most savvy users have been aware for a long time that the security built into the OS is easily circumvented in several ways but this might still be news to many new users.

Two Apps for Work and Play

Mobli, Inc. has released ProjectTrak to help contractors manage multiple projects. This timekeeping tool allows users to assign projects to individual clients. Simply tap a button and a timer starts for that project. Start and stop projects as needed throughout the day, then view accumulated times. A detail view shows the daily totals for each project, plus users can check projects off as clients are billed. It is $25. -Heather

$50 Rebate Coming for Visor Deluxe

Handspring is about to start offering a $50 rebate on its Visor Deluxe, according to a Cnet article. This will reduce the Visor to $200, the same price at which Palm is expected to release the m105. The rebate will begin this Sunday and run through April.

Handspring is clearly trying to steal some of Palm's thunder during the launch of the m105, which is probably going to be next week. By offering a device with many of the same features plus the Springboard slot at the same price they will probably have some success.
