Possible m500 and m505 Shipping Dates

Certainly the most frequently asked question in the Palm world now is "When will the m500/m505 ship?" After Palm's announcement last week that they would be delayed "a few weeks", the frequency only increased. Palm hasn't made any recent official statements about release dates but various online stores have.

FranklinCovey is continuing to say that it will be shipping the m500 on April 26 and the m505 on May 10. They will cost $400 and $450 respectively and come with the Franklin Planner Software Suite. -Mike Cane

Staples.com is listing shipping dates of April 29 for the m500 and May 17 for the m505. And Edealfinder.com has $40 off purchases of $200 or more on Staples.com -Thane McCready

CompUSA says its expected ship date for the m500 is April 30 and for the m505 is May 21. -Ed

Amazon is being a bit vague. It says, "We expect to receive our initial shipment of the Palm m500 handheld to arrive by the end of April" and "We expect to receive our initial shipment of the Palm m505 handheld to arrive by the middle of May." -Ed

It also isn't clear whether Palm will ship units first to people who have preordered off its site or to its large retail customers. It is possible the m500 series will be in stores before they are shipping directly from Palm.

If anyone sees another ship date from an online store, please post it here. -Ed

Stapels boo-boo?

jzaring @ 4/17/2001 10:49:27 AM #
If you go to the Staples sight and pre-order an m505, it indicates that it only costs $20.00. What's up with this?

I'd suggest you buy one.

$20 to reserve
alee @ 4/17/2001 11:00:54 AM #
It's $20 to reserve, and then the rest will be billed when they ship.

Forget about using the coupon. The order value goes in at $20 not the full price of the unit, so coupon thresholds are not met. At least that's what happened when I tried. I have a m505 on order from Palm but am seriously considering cancelling and ordering from Staples (includes a free game pack with pre-order) or Franklin Covey. I think I may receive my unit sooner this way.

Staples actually says May 10th for the m505:

Palm will be shipped automatically to you on ship date listed below:
Description Date of availability
Palm M500 April 29
Palm M505 May 10

wording makes it seem like pretty firm ship dates....

I ordered from Staples over the phone yesterday and they told me not to even think about it before May 22. The rep acknowledged the dates on the site, but said it is wrong.

However, I do have some good news. Go into your local Staples and ask the manager when he/she expects them in. My local Staples guy told me that he is expecting the m500 this Friday, 4/20- to be on the shelves 4/27. He said the m505 should also be in his store around the same time frame. I asked him how and why he was so confident? He said that they already printed up a newspaper insert for this coming weekend with both of them on the cover. He told me to call him this Friday and he would put one on the side for me. He also told me that he wasn't certain if he would even get the Visor Edge and he got 40 of them right way.

I personally find the people at Staples stores to be excellent and more than willing to help. I returned two iPaqs (poor h/w, buggy s/w) at the same store and they took them back with no questions.

Go into your local Staples and TALK to them- I think we may have some luck this way. I supposedly have the first order in with outpost.com (Monday, 3/19 @8am) and those bozos won't even give me a date. I'll cancel on them in a heartbeat if Staples comes through- plus you can print the online coupons and use them in the stores- I did it when I bought the iPaq.

Sorry for the length- just frustrated like everyone else...

Personally, I'm going to hold off on preordering the m500. I'm going to wait until it actually starts shipping. Then I'll use the coupon (# 91320) from edealfinder.com that gives you $40 off any purchase over $200. This will also allow me to break the $50 threshold needed in order to receive free shipping. So, I'll get the m500 for a sweet $360 - what a deal!

P.S. The details for this coupon state that the expiration date is "unknown", so they may drop that coupon before the units start shipping - wouldn't surprise me.

Sparco

Spartacus @ 4/17/2001 11:43:34 AM #
Sparco.com has been showing ship dates of 4-17 and 4-21 for the 500 and 505. Today they are now listing a 5-15 ship date for both. Will they ever ship?

RE: Sparco
scouter075 @ 4/17/2001 12:21:39 PM #
I have an order placed with Sparco for a 505 and some goodies. The ETA showed 4/17 but today I was told 5/15.

scouter075@mindspring.com

I've already got my m505!

mikecane @ 4/17/2001 5:20:58 PM #
I came across this fellow named H.G. Wells with this wacky time machine. It worked! Trouble is, the damned m505 has a malfunctioning clock and I can't send it to Palm for service until it's been officially released!

OK, stop the %$#@ing already. Just a little (very little!) humor to make you pause. I'm as hot to see the m505 as everyone else...

Decisions...

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/17/2001 6:24:16 PM #
Guys help me out here...

Okay I think I might want to order from Staples.com - but I noticed at checkout it wants to charge me $7.95 SHIPPING to reserve it? LOL! This does NOT seem fair. I didn't order it yet though...

Also... right now I have a Clie... I LOVE having pictures with some of my address book records... can I do this on the Palm M505?

Lastly... is it smart to buy the Palm M505 now? Or should I wait and see IF Sony will even release the color Clie here in the states? That handheld seems INCREDIBLE but I don't want to wait forever... nor spend $500 on a handheld twice in a year... HELP!

RE: Decisions...
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/17/2001 8:00:48 PM #
You can wait on Sony, but that could be awhile. I do know that there is software to download to view pictures on the Palm, and I think there are a few different options. You should be able to do it with Fireviewer, and if you are looking for photos in your address book, I know the software is available, but the title escapes me. As for hardware, wait until late May to buy a 505, then if the Sony does get released, return the PAlm to the store you buy it from.

Also most of the Staples will have a few kiosks where you can order online and pay in the store. That way they won't charge you for any shipping costs and you'll have a choice to either have it delivered to you or pick it up at the stores.

Franklin Covey

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/17/2001 8:27:18 PM #
Just checked the Franklin Covey site . . .

"Palm™ m505 Handheld - Franklin Planner™ Edition
New - Pre-Order Now! Begins Shipping May 18th!"

Looks like the date has been pushed back from the 10th to the 18th!!!!! I've got mine prepaid at a local Frankling Covey - they were not informed of any delays in delivery of the m505.

I've been tracking the [lack of] progress of this rollout - I don't think I'm stretching it to say that even Palm does not know when actual ship dates will be!!!!! What a joke.

What about OTHER m5xx items?

mikecane @ 4/18/2001 10:55:41 AM #
Did everyone order just an m505 from Palm? What about the availability of:

- Portable Keyboard
- blank SD cards
- SD card-based programs
- leather cases

Are any of those shipping?

New Palm peripherals
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/18/2001 7:25:53 PM #
There are a few SKU numbers for the new Palm peripherals showing up in the system inventory already at Staples. Those items are slim leather cases for the Palm M50x and some styluses. I haven't seen any keyboard or modem for the new palm yet.

mikecane @ 4/19/2001 8:22:50 AM #
BTW, I just saw at CompUSA in NYC yesterday that Lexar has released a 64MB SD card. $179.00! Ow.

(CLIE fans should note that Viking has released a USB MemStick reader for $59.95!)

RE: What about OTHER m5xx items?
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/19/2001 7:41:28 PM #
I called Palm about two weeks after I first pre-ordered the M505 and added a portable keyboard and two cases. The lady on the line said they should ship the same time the unit does. But I don't know if I trust her.
