Access E-mail from Multiple Accounts with Mobile Mail

Mobile Mail is a free service that lets handheld users check multiple e-mail accounts. It allows complete access to many types of accounts, including read, write, reply, and forward. Best of all, it works well with AvantGo, allowing users to send and receive e-mail whenever they HotSync. It also allows access to newsgroups, ICQ, news, weather, and much more.

HotMail and MSN users have full access to their accounts, as well as Microsoft Exchange users. It also supports IMAP. There are some limitations. While Mobile Mail supports retrieving e-mail through POP, it doesn't support sending mail through SMTP, which most dial-up ISPs use. But HotMail accounts are free. There is no limit to the number of accounts that can be accessed.

There is also a PQA that allows wireless users to access Mobile Mail.

A list of all the functions that this service provides includes:

  • Unlimited NNTP newsgroup accounts
  • Read, send, reply to newsgroup messages
  • Send ICQ Messages
  • Find ICQ Friends
  • Send Message to Cell Phone/Pager
  • Browse/Search Internet
  • Get stock quotes
  • Get Maps and Directions
  • Find Starbucks
  • Get Local Information
  • Whois/Domain Name Lookup
  • Weather Information
  • DNS Lookup
  • Dictionary Lookup
  • Translate e-mail between 8 languages
Mobile Mail's list of future enhancements includes the ability to customize the front page. Currently, all the above functions are available, which leads to a very large AvantGo channel. This should be changed in a week or so.

I cant wait to try this!

WOW!!!!!

Mobile Mail is Great!
Ed @ 7/2/2001 12:26:04 PM #
I've been playing with this since Friday. I think it's great. I've been looking for something like this for forever. I've successfully sent and received numerous e-mail messages. I've connected with my modem and done this live and the AvantGo channel works well, too.

I just hope it doesn't become a victim of its own success and become so swamped it slows to a crawl. I'm sure small ads will eventually start appearing on the site but that is a small price to pay.

Are u guys using it through the hotsync conduit or directly through modem? I've tried to get it to work through hotsync but have had no luck. I saw mention from Ed about something to do w/ avantgo? Is there a channel conduit that needs to be setup through them also? Any help would be appreciated. I'm just interested in checking/sending mail through hotsync for multiple accts...kinda like the included sub-par mail app that comes w/ Palm OS

As Norm would say, you need to read, understand, and follow the instructions on this page:

. . . and don't forget to wear your safety glasses.

You'll have to wait...

If you have a lot of data in you email accounts. Boy does a lot of minutes for the Hotsync! I appears to be good. You can select/unselect many of the items mention in the original article. I have tons of stuff in my hotmail account. I will have to clean it out if I want to reduce the hotsync time. It would be nice if I could select/deselect the Hotmail folder downloaded. I would like not see the trash or deleted folder and possibly the sented folder.

Now you can turn off the you don't want to sync, go under "Edit" of the account you want to "minimize".

Hotmail accounts are free...

I.M. Anonymous @ 7/2/2001 2:23:00 PM #
...but since Hotmail, like all M$ services, use M$ Passport, it will cost you your soul...

Yes, you can read, reply, reply all, and forward. Depending on the device you use, you may or may not need an application, check out this page,

I need that

sounds like a perfert solution to me. The idea of turning a software in a service is the way to go. If more software are turning into service, best yet wireless service, no one has to worry about limitation of memory anyway. Can you say network computer?

I cannot access mobile mail from my palm7. Do I have to logon and sign up? I am off work for 2 weeks. However, when I am working, the first thing I do between 3:30AM and 4:00AM is synchronze my palm when my alarm wakes me up. While that is happening, I am getting ready for work. When I am ready, my palm is all set. Except for my AOL mail. For that I use the palm modem attached to my phone line, since I do not want the download of that charged against my wireless account. If I could download aol mail with my avantgo, that would be great. Now for the big question. Is that possible?

AOL 3.0 for Palm OS, which is currently in beta, introduces the ability to HotSync AOL e-mail to a Palm without a modem.

I'm not an AOL user so I don't know how well this works.

Sign onto AOL and type the Keyword "Anwhere Beta." You can then download 3.0. Beware, there are different elements to this program, one of which install conduits to take over your address book. Don't check off that option if you don't want AOL to do that. I use this on my m505. It works great. You sign onto AOL and then start a HotSync. The AOL conduit accesses the specified AOL account and puts your mail in the Saved tab of the File Cabinet. You can also write e-mail off-line, which is sent on the next on-line HotSync. There are modem options that I can't try because I refuse to by that brick of a modem they sell for the m505.

Huang personally responded to a request I made for help in seting up my Mobile Mail account. He has a personal web page at www.bobhuang.com. His resume is posted there.

Seems like a nice guy. He is quick to respond to requests for help.

How do you do this?

Where do you download the PQA file to allow mobile mail to work on my handheld. I have it all set up online. Not very user friendly.

i can't remove the deleted files from the trash. strange!? - is this a bug or ? - great avantgo page ! hope it's really 'private' (as if m$ ever was) - thumbs up - both hands

One HUGE channel, just like what Ed says

Graffiti @ 7/5/2001 8:33:55 AM #
I have a problem disabling the IRC option and enabling the ICQ one. Tried it on both IE and AvantGo without success. Any of you have that glitch?

A small tip for Hotmail users on Mobile Mail: Keep your Hotmail account clean and lean. Mobile Mail will pull ALL messages from Hotmail's default folders in one HotSync operation alone, and that can translate to a very very big (not to mention extremely looooong serial HotSync operation) Mobile Mail channel indeed. 1 e-mail message = 1 AvantGo page: I have an average of 200 messages at any given time (no thanks to the Bulk Mail folder filled with 99% spam) so go figure how long that took .....

Of course, one has the option of limiting the Mobile Mail channel size on AvantGo - but AvantGo's servers doesn't filter channel content, so you're out of luck if it hacks of parts of Mobile Mail content you want the most :-P

All this, and we have yet to touch on the other functions and the space they would take: Your have been warned .....

Click on "Edit" for your HotMail account. Under the area where you can enter some possible Signatures is a form where you can control which folders get displayed. I reduced my HotMail account to only the Inbox, which is pretty much the minimum.

There is another possibility that might work for you. If you have an m505 and a modem, you have the ability to use PQAs right out of the box. My cable modem was out of service for a couple of days and I depended on a dial-up connection and Mobile Mail's PQA to access my e-mail.

Sorry, I wasn't too clear. When you are on Mobile Mail, you will see a link called "Edit" underneath the e-mail address for the account that you are downloading with Mobile Mail. This is where you control what folders get displayed.

Bob has updated Mobile Mail again. You now can set which of the many, many functions appear on your personal homepage. This means you can make your channel as large or small as you wish.

Re: Smaller Channel

Graffiti @ 7/7/2001 5:46:23 AM #
Thanks Ed for your tip on creating a smaller channel for my Mobile Mail.

Will try out PQA version when I upgrade to the m505. FYI, I read PalmInfocenter.com exclusively via AvantGo and update it wirelessly via IR using my Nokia 6210 when I am on the go. So you and fellow posters will have to excuse me if I appear incredibly slow in my replies and posts as updating wirelessly is extremely slow (not to mention expensive!) on a 9.6kbps GSM connection :-)

Love this channel; keep it up Ed - and not forgetting Ryan, and all the regular posters.

Needs a better GUI

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/9/2001 4:19:13 PM #
On my Pam7x, there needs to be a better interface for the 3.0 software..

In the e-mail screens -

You should be able to highlight for copy and paste
like you can in I-messenger.

It should work with the clipboard from other apps
which right now it does not do.

You should be able to delete messages without
reading them like you can in Hobomail.

The program should time out and bring you back
to the main logon screen without having to click
on "log out" or getting the time out message.
Poorly written interface. C'mon guys.

It should check for new e-mail at the main screen
and notify us as such without having to enter the
e-mail screen, like on the main screen on AOL 4.0.

Needs a lot of work

this doesnt work anymore....
