Silver Screen 2.0 Released

Pocket Sensei has released a new version its Silver Screen application launcher. Version 2.0 adds a new pop up window at the bottom of the screen. When activated, this window will show all application folders in the device and allow users to switch folders from there. This window comes up over the window that allows for beaming, deleting, and checking file folders.

Additionally, the battery gauge at the top now has the ability to tell what the percentage of space left on the device is as well as the amount of space in megabytes (rounded off).

Version 2.0 also introduces a ticker that lists Datebook and To Do items without having to leave the launcher environment. In addition a tabbed interface makes navigating between categories easier.

SilverScreen 2.0 costs $20. Registered SilverScreen customers can upgrade to version 2.0 for $10. Those who purchased after February 14, 2001 are entitled to SilverScreen 2.0 and all 2.x versions free of charge.

So Far it's great!

Everything about this launcher is cool... Love the way it makes the Palm OS look! Supports up to 16 bit color with changeable themes...

Still have to wait for SD support but 4.0 is not a problem otherwise.

PocketSensei waited a long time to add tabs but now I can see why. This is the only implementation that really works AND looks great. This is simply an outstanding replacement to the default launcher.

SD Support
scouter075 @ 6/19/2001 7:17:00 PM #
Here's what PocketSensei said anout SD support:

We are working on support for the new expansion cards but no release date is set. Version 2.0 corrects minor bugs concerning operation with OS 4.0 but does not yet have support for the SD cards. We want to implement a system that improves upon the default launchers handling of the cards. Stay tuned!

Re: 2.0 vs 1.9x

Not really a great improvement that worth my $10 from I have read. Perhaps I'm wrong. I would rather prefer a grayscale of 16 shade of gray instead of 4 right now.

I agree, why pay 10bucks for minor(IMHO) improvements. What a disappointment!

Battery Gauge Function

This is not a new function. Already worked the same in previous versions!

Megalauncher

superbenk @ 6/19/2001 12:37:08 PM #
Don't know if it's even around anymore, but I love Megalauncher. I tried Silver Screen awhile ago, but ML does SO MUCH MORE! To me anyhow it's more of a full featured OS feel where you can manipulate ALL the files of your Palm completely. I only have the IIIxe so I don't know what it looks like in color and I know it doesn't do the snazzy things with the icons that Silver Screen does, but functionally it's an incredible and more powerful app.

Backing up Megalauncher II
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/19/2001 1:27:06 PM #
I love Megalauncher. I've used just about every launcher out there, including Lauch 'em, Launcher III, Handscape, and Silverscreen too, but none of them even begin to come close to Megalauncher. It's the same price as Silverscreen 2.0 on palmgear.com but it's features outweigh it considerable. The color support is great, the functionality is untouchable, blah blah blah. I'd go forever. It's got a trash can like your desktop, it's got a compression feature BUILT RIGHT IN, so you can "zip" unfrequently used apps and save them for later. You can change color schemes and views, there's built in clocks (standard and world), hotlists, frequent lists, button tests, drap and drop support... Hell, rename your apps if you like. The BEST this about Megalaucher, considering everything it does, is it's footprint...about 160k! Fantastic for what it does. I've been a registered un-user of Silverscreen ever since I've touched Megalauncher. Oh, and the support doesn't get any better! Try it!

Oh, yeah. Silverscreen is good, too.
Kinda.
You know.

Can Megalauncher access the SD cards in OS 4?

RE: MegaUnstable
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/19/2001 5:43:00 PM #
Have you ever even tried using the scroll bar in this app? It's a complete joke! The apps fly by first one way and then another and then the bar returns to the top of the scroll area.

As for changing the looks you're limited to switching between awful looking mono-colors! This thing is so Windoze circa 1985.

SilverScreen Rocks

rahasya2000 @ 6/19/2001 5:34:59 PM #
SilverScreen is like a tireless juggernaut and is really the only serious launcher replacement. I've been working in marketing at Morgan Stanley for the past two years and our manager insisted we all get this on our Palms. I was instantly hooked and could never return to GoBar or MegaLauncher which I had tried previously and now seem hopelessly dated.

My hope is that Palm will acquire this software and replace their long in the tooth interface. SilverScreen keeps the easy interface of the default launcher but tucks away tons of great features and has style to boot.

I read the ticker will eventually support stock quotes and sports scores so I can keep up with Tiger Woods in realtime and trade my portfolio when I'm on the train.

Can't wait for 320x320 support for the new Clié!

OTHER LAUNCHERS

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/19/2001 7:02:23 PM #
I've tried most all of the launchers, and prior to the m505 Launch'Em 3 (yes Launch'Em 3 NOT Launcher 3). With MSMount it is hopelessly slow no matter how you tweak it. Launcher 3 looks too home-made. LauncherLite is by far the fastest, but it is kind of awkward if use lots of tabs, and has a very "techno" look to it. SilverScreen is nice, but very slow. Mega Launcher is a nice, full featured app, but it too slow and is a little awkward changing catagories. I tried PAL and found it to be a very clean, handsome/minimalistic app that is likewise functional. Not as full-featured as Launch'Em but not nearly as slow. I was amazed. If you're not satisfied with your current launcher and MSMount it's a cool option. Maybe when AutoCF is available our former launchers will work faster ;)

RE: OTHER LAUNCHERS
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/19/2001 7:22:39 PM #
Yup, SPEED is my most important issue with 3rd party launchers. LaunchEm was taking 4 SECONDS on my Vx to display so now I run the standard Palm launcher augmented with PopUpFavourites. It's not pretty but at least it works.

Silver Screen IMO is too slow.

RE: OTHER LAUNCHERS
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/19/2001 8:07:51 PM #
Yup, I agree with you that Silverscreen prior to 2.0 were really slow but take a look at the new 2.0. I've been avoiding Silverscreen alltogether before but the much improved speed on Silverscreen 2.0 keeps me back to it. Test it out..

RE: OTHER LAUNCHERS
vendriga @ 6/20/2001 12:48:38 AM #
If you wnat to run apps in the SD/MMC from a 3rd party launcher, use power run! Move the files in the /palm/launcher/ folder to the /palm/programs/powerrun/. Its definitely faster than MS mount.

RE: OTHER LAUNCHERS
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/20/2001 9:01:21 AM #
why dont you all use the free and best launcher, launcehr III

RE: OTHER LAUNCHERS
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/21/2001 3:34:57 AM #
PowerRun is much, much, much slower than MsMount for medium to large size DB files. Its OK for small files....

Silverscreen Tabs

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/20/2001 7:59:57 AM #
I'm testing SilverScreen 2.0 and found the ticker to work well but can't find how to activate the tabs. I went to their web site but struck out in finding a manual. Any help would be appreciated!

RE: Silverscreen Tabs
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/20/2001 9:00:53 AM #
I had the same problem, but I recently stumbled across the solution. Just enable the Pop-up
Toolbox. Just above the upper right corner of the Pop-up Toolbox, select the small arrow to toggle
to the tabs...

RE: Silverscreen Tabs
Lucky Dragon @ 6/20/2001 11:04:25 AM #
IMNSHO, Tabs are a big waste of screen space. The reason I switched from Launch'Em to SilverScreen was because I hated the tabs. It's a good thing PocketSensei made the tabs optional and I hope they keep it that way.

"/T" brings up the tabs

However, on my version of SilverScreen 2.0, the "/T" stroke brings up the ticker. The only way I have found to activate the tabs is to click on the little arrow above the trashcan.

where can i get silver screen version 2.0

about the ticker

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/20/2001 3:25:54 PM #
one thing i found in the ticker is that if i click the to do things floating on the ticker, then the ticker runs my doc reader - CspotRun. at first, i didnt understand why it happened. now i figured out that it just runs the program that is assigned in the to-do hardware button. (i assigned CspotRun in the to-do button.)

likewise, when i clicked the date book things floating on the ticker, it ran Action names assigned in the datebook button.

M505 Issues w. Silverscreen 1.9.8

NAHuber @ 6/21/2001 4:30:40 PM #
I like the new features of Silverscreen 2.0, but the developers have left a very bad impression on me due to the issues I have had with version 1.9.8 on the M505. Silverscreen had the most irritating bugs of any of my applications when I upgraded to the 505. I wrote to the developers and they seemed to be aware of the bugs. Yet now, in spite of this I have to pay 9.95 to get software that works properly on the M505..just because I purchased the software a month earlier than their cut off date for a free upgrade.

tabs/ticker no advance

acolwood @ 6/21/2001 4:44:35 PM #
Tabs still need 2 taps to change category (3 if you need to change page). The ticker is unreadable on my IIIx tho I'm sure it's better on later devices. Overall there's no real advance or improvement for me. This seems a bit like Windows style feature bloat.

megalauncher

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/25/2001 11:33:57 AM #
Although not incredibly speedy, I like megalauncher. It is okay for the launcher part, but is great for the utilities built into it. Its multiple ways to access files really help with keeping track of database files, etc.
