VersalMail 2.7 Now Available for the Treo 600

palmOne today announced palmOne's VersaMail 2.7 wireless email software is now available for Treo 600 smartphones. The availability of VersaMail 2.7 on the Treo 600 at a price, provides users with access to IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) and demonstrates palmOne's continued investment in software and accessories available for the Treo 600.

Some versions of the Treo 600 currently include Treo Mail, which provides basic POP email access. Now, with the availability of VersaMail v2.7 for the Treo 600, both POP and IMAP are supported. The IMAP protocol is used by some popular consumer email services as well as many small- and medium-sized businesses for corporate email. VersaMail is now available for handhelds and smartphones, offering customers a common user interface for email.

"We've heard from many of our customers that IMAP email on their Treo 600 is important. In keeping with delivering what matters most to our customers, we're offering VersaMail 2.7," said Steve Janiak, senior product manager at palmOne, Inc. "In addition to IMAP support, VersaMail 2.7 brings its advanced functionality, such as HTML mail support, and extensive message management features, making it even easier for mobile professionals to stay on top of their email without compromise."

VersaMail for Treo 600 and Palm OSKey features Treo 600 users can take advantage of with VersaMail 2.7 include:

  • Automatic Mail Retrieval and Notification -- Users can stay on top of their life with automatic retrieval and notification. VersaMail automatically downloads new messages and alerts users based on their instructions.
  • Web Content Support -- Read simple HTML messages or messages with colors or styles. Tap hyperlinks or any "www" sequence to automatically launch the Web Pro Browser 3.
  • Inbox Management -- VersaMail has extensive message-management features. Users can choose to get headers only, set message size limits and set filters. Messages can be deleted on smartphone, server, or both. Trash can be automatically emptied at preset intervals.
  • Display Options -- Display options allow users to see messages in one or two lines to view more messages or more detail, as well as select font size, read/unread colors, sorting options, and fields to display.

VersaMail 2.7 for Treo 600 smartphones is available today from the palmOne software store for an estimated U.S. street price of $29.99.

How about the Tungsten's users?

feranick @ 12/2/2004 8:03:33 PM #
As usual, PalmOne left out the "other" customers, the Tungsten users.

I have a Tungsten C which is screaming to get at least the email client updated (we could add to the list the newer PIMs....)

Sadly enough you can still by an outdated but factory new Tungsten C at 400USD, with still old and crappy software. What are they thinking?

They are trying to get ALL T|Tx users to migrate to Treos. Of course, given the HIGHLY overpriced nature of Treos and the fact that the carriers get you by the ba**s with 2-year contracts galore, P1 would actually be shooting themselves in the collective feet if this stragey won. Yes, it'd fill up the coffers short term for a few quarters but long-term, the "diehard" users like those that frequent PIC would find themselves unable to upgrade as often as they'd like. There are many individuals here who'll buy a new Zire or Tungsten for $200-$300 every year or two just to have new tech but wouldn't dream of dropping $400-$600 on a smartphone that would leave them mired in a long-term contact.

And yes, there DESPERATELY needs to be some clear path of paid upgrades for existing Tungsten users. Right now, VersaMail 2.7 and the new Blazer would be nice additions (say, $40 for a bundle of the two for Zire T3 owners) and then a $50 package for the new PIMs, new VM and new Blazer for T|C and Z71 owners.

1) Tungsten C users could keep about 25% of their internal-memory resident apps, and Tungsten T5 users would be allowed to keep about 5% of their apps to move to the Treo 650 (which has about 14MB usable RAM because of the small chip combined with a 33-40+% loss due to file system changes). It's doubtful that PalmOne has a clue how to migrate people over to the Treo line (other than to dish out $10 128MB SD cards and tell people to hang on and someday you might have close to the memory of the Tro 600 if you keep the 650).

2) Versamail (formerly Multimail) may have it's advantages (when Palm bought them they WERE the best going...). But Snappermail is tough to beat nowadays - though the databases are reported to "balloon up" on the 650 file system. If Palm wants $30 for their product, then Snappermail is a no brainer for all legacy devices(as the 650 comes with versamail whether you want it or not).

3) Those long-term cell contracts can be deadly, but I'm grateful for mine because it kept me from immediately dumping my 600 for (what I soon discovered to be) the false promises of the 650. 14-day return periods are well worth using.

I am confused.

I have a T3 with Versamail 2.61. What would this give me that I don't already have?

Hmm I'm still not sure why most users think snappermail is the best email out there. Let's see, VM3.0 gives you: pop, imap, html, auto get, ssl, EAS, attachments, docs to go integration, photo/movies integration, folders (IMAP), SD card support, very intuitive attachment panel, multiple accounts, and other stuff.

To get all those features in SnapperMail you need to pay $60 for the enterprise edition.

Sometimes it's very strange that if thirdparty charge $60 for email client it's okay, in fact, because it's expensive, it's being considered the best. And if Palm charges anything at all, then people will start saying that it's DOOMED... Oh, and do you know that the $30 snappermail only gives you plain text rendering?

I have a TungstenC that comes with VersaMail 2.5. With this version you cannot have authenticated SMTP, which is available only with the VW 2.7. No big deal? Well, if you use Gmail (and I do a lot), the POP service they provide requires TLS authentication SMTP. In other words, I can received emails but not send them. You may suggest me to use the web version. Again, that doesn't work with the crappy web browser bundled with the TC (nor with WebPro).

Bottom line: if you use a gmail account and you want to access to your email with your Palm, you just can't. The only way out is VersaMail 2.7 which offers the SMTP option (or the way too expansive snappermail). Otherwise your PDA is useless

I agree, $30 is not too much just because it comes from Palm. The price tag for SnapperMail Enterprise is higher than I'd prefer, but it's not considered the best because of the dollar amount. I have both, and paid extra for Snapper because IMHO it's a better client.

"Bottom line: if you use a gmail account and you want to access to your email with your Palm, you just can't."

Bottom line: if you rely on a FREE e-mail account then don't expect it to support everything. I have little sympathy.

The problem here is not Gmail, but PalmOne. Are you telling me that Gmail is the only email provider requiring secure authertication? Please... My institution will require the same in few months, so the problem will come up again.

I wasn't looking for your sympathy. Just expressing my disappointment towards PalmOne and their horrible support to Tungsten users.

Too costly

Quickster @ 12/2/2004 8:22:13 PM #
If Palm One is serious about their eMail client then charging existing users $30 is certainly a good way to ensure that their VersaMail product will die on the vine.

Personally, I do not even think it should come on the device and if they choose to include it they should give you the option of deleting it so it does not take up valuable memory space.

RE: Too costly
MikeInDM @ 12/3/2004 11:17:31 AM #
that's right. everything that anyone does with palm software should be free. and while we are at it, the palm should be free too.
RE: Too costly
yakisoba @ 12/3/2004 3:45:53 PM #
wow, Quickster, now imagine you have a company, and you've spent millions of dollars building an application. Wouldn't it be nice if you can sell your software and get some return on investment? Or maybe your company should just give everything it has ever produced for free because you're so serious about your product? Hmm maybe you also think Microsoft is not serious about the office software, because they are charging $300+ for it? Do you think Office will just die on the vine because it's a $300 software?

RE: Too costly
MikeInDM @ 12/3/2004 4:00:44 PM #
LOL... yep, microsoft is 'dying on the vine' all the way to the bank :-)

Forget it!

gilbas99 @ 12/14/2004 9:29:11 AM #
You would expect a better integration with the Treo:
This version does not support 5way navigation and does not interface with Treo notifications. When new email arrives, all you get is a standard (old) Palm sound with that terrible flashing asterisk on the top left corner

There are other options for IMAP mail...
