Google Launches Gmail for Mobile Devices

Gmail for Mobile Devices Google has just launched a mobile version of Gmail. You can now get your Gmail messages from the web browser on your mobile phone or handheld. It allows you to read and reply email and supports photos, office documents and PDF attachments.

Couldn't get m.gmail.com to work on my smartphone, but gmail.com redirects to the mobile site. I have to say it looks really rather good.

It works on my T|X with Blazer, and it also works on my Sony Ericsson K700i...

For whatever reason Google has opted not to do simple html which almost any phone would be able to handle. Instead they've funked it up (yeah, I'm not a techie) and thus the limited support which does not include IE/FF.

Most phones in use cannot handle "Simple HTML". They use WML.

Only later phones support XHTML.

Furthermore, every phone has different limitations like the maximum size of page. For simple application like stock quote, it is not a problem. However, for application like web mail, one page may be potentially very long and upset some phones. So it is good to be conservative to list proven phones.

My SE K700i is not on the list and it work well.

Could someone please enlighten me as to why I would need G-mail rather than use Versamail to handle my ISPs mail account on a Tungsten T3? I can also get my mail on their webmail system with WebPro, if I'm desperate.

What's the advantage here? Is it that so many use the G-mail web system and now it's optimized for mobiles?

Yes. They didn't launch GMail for Palm devices. They launched it for mobile devices. Not every phone has a POP3 client that supports SSL. Heck, some don't even have a POP3 client. Also, People that get 50-100 emails a day that use gmail as their main account probably won't care much for the MASSIVE backlog you have to slog through with a POP3 client over GPRS if you haven't checked it via the mobile client yet on the web you have read and archived them all.

I'd only want a VersaMail replacement if it:

1. Is free/cheap
2. Is more reliable than VM

VM is actually QUITE robust for basic or middlin' needs. Palm just needs to drastically rewrite it and remove all of the junk legacy bandaids from the old MultiMail days.

Ed does make some good points, Pat. I could conceivably see checking my web on the "web" via something like this on a pohone and, if there's anything of major interest, "permanently" downloading it via VM on my Palm.

Checking anything, even mail2web or mail2wap on WebPro or Blazer makes for an...interesting experience (to say the least!)

It may also depend on the filters you have turned on. I have not experimented with it yet, but you may filter only certain mail into your inbox and then need to use a web based alternative to check for that important message that was missed by the filter (but you know was recently sent). Like "I know you are lost, did you get the directions I just sent you?". I do that with other mail services currently, but have not attempted with g-mail yet.

One of the best features of Gmail is that you can quickly search through all of your messages. This is supported by the mobile version. With Versamail, this would only be possible if you never deleted anything.
