Parts Shortage Affects Palm Production

According to c|net, Palm confirmed today that production of its handheld computers has slowed due to a shortage of Flash memory and LCD screens. "The cell phone explosion has really hurt our ability to get as many LCDs as we'd like, and we're watching the flash memory too. It's in a bit of tight supply," a Palm representative said.

The shortage is expected to continue for several months. A quick check of the Palm online store shows that almost every kind of Palm is on back order.

Update: A spokeswoman for Handspring said it is experiencing no parts shortages. And Thanks to DJ, for sending in this USA Today article. It mentions that many retailers such as Amazon and Circuit City also have Palm's on back order.

There are no IIIe's in stock anywhere in Pennsylvania. How bad must things be?

There's nothing up here in Vancouver too. No Palm V or Vx, just IIIc. I've been waiting for months to buy a PalmVx and now that I'm ready, there's none! So I feel your pain...

Handspring Not Effected?

Chris Foster @ 5/24/2000 9:54:17 PM #
Is Handspring effected the same way as Palm?

Sure they are also affected! Whatever they say!

There is some shortage in LCD crystals (not so serious).

There is a major shortate in some SMD capacitors, specially Tantals. It's really crazy, prices increased by a 300%

We do elctronic assembly (not for HS or Palm) and we are very badly affected too.

*Now* What Do I Do!?

John Gibney @ 5/26/2000 7:29:32 PM #
I'm going to be making my way over to the USA in mid-June and will be staying for a couple of weeks... and I'm wondering if I should call through an order to one of the computer shops for a PalmIIIxe *now*, with a view to collecting it whilst I'm over there... *or* should I just take my chances on the availability of the units being Ok whilst I'm over there...?

Anyone "in the know" have any suggestions!?

Well, I ordered my IIIxe from BUY.com on 5/16/2000. It is now 6/2 and I still have no palm. Buy.com does not even have a ship date to tell me. There are a few in stock at retail stores in my area, but I suggest you order asap!!

Palm shortage

I.M. Anonymous @ 9/1/2000 4:53:50 PM #
I went to Circut City in Peoria to look at a Palm VII and asked the salesman if he had any of the VIIx and he said, "Sure how many do you want?" They had just received a large order of all Palms. And the price was the same as any web site I checked. If your despirate, drop me a note, send me the $$$ and I'll get you one, you pay shipping & tax of course.
