Comments on: Verizon Sweetens Buy One, Get One Free Offer

verizon webos palm pre pixiEver since the launch of the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus on January 25th, Verizon Wireless has been continuously running a BOGO ("Buy One, Get One Free") promotion. Now TechCrunch brings news of an offer already confirmed to be live on Verizon's web store.

In what should both address the grumblings of customers hoping to have a two-Pre household and give a nice boost to Palm's sales figures for the quarter, Verizon has now re-launched the BOGO promotion with more flexible terms. Effective February 15th, customers can choose any combination of Verizon WebOS and Android-powered handsets alongside a handful of non-smartphone "multimedia phones" as eligible devices for the promotion. So, in short, you can now get a "free" Pre Plus with the purchase of another Pre Plus or even tip a toe into the competing smartphone OS waters and get an Android phone alongside a WebOS device.

...the BOG offer applies to a gajillion smartphones (er...3G phones) Verizon offers. That is, Palm is competing with al the other phones of note at Verizon instead of "merely" with the Droid.

Interesting way of distinguishing between smartphone platforms

Saw a new VZW flyer mailer thingie today.

They are aggressively touting all of their new smartphone offerings.

"Android: Super-fast processing for running multiple apps at once and fully customizable screens for ultimate personalization.

Palm: Contact synchronization , intuitive messaging features, and automatic backup of your important data

BlackBerry: Business applications support and multimedia capabilities make it the perfect combination of fun and functionality.

Check out the enclosed brochure to see the unique features of Android technology, as well as the intuitive characteristics of Palm. Then select your new Android, Palm or BlackBerry smartphone today."

Since it's a verrrrry slow discussion day today, I noticed a couple of interesting things in that flyer:
#1 Funny how they keep referring to the platform as 'Palm" and not "WebOS"
#2 Funny how they tout the multimedia capabilities of BlackBerry since, microSD slot aside, it's weaker than the other 2 platforms for that kind of stuff.
#3 They play up Android's multitaskling when in actuality WebOS does it better and much more elegantly. Yet all of the features they showcase for Palm are very much present within Android.
#4 Droid Eris (HTC), Pixi Plus and the new BB Curve 8530 are all now "free", at least under this promo for new or renewing customers. That's make for one helluva low-end shootout, huh?

I guess then that you can turn a Gekko into a Lounge Lizard, but you can't turn a lounge lizard into a husband?

The real trick is turning a housewife into a hooker.

And you thought this was written by someone who *knew* stuff ... why?

Aside from displaying the extreme idiocy of the people who compiled it and the ones who approved it, if this is the way Verizon is positioning these phones ... good bloody luck to Palm!

I always assume the worst when it comes to marketing-types and their marketing-speak. I just thought it was an interesting little thing to get in the mail that reinforces the strange (IMHO) level of support VZW is giving WebOS. I mean, we're not even a month after release and we've had, what, 4 different VZW/Palm TV spots, a decent print ad campaign, and now price drops & an improved BOGO offer!?! They must be expecting big things from the 1.4 update!

Most mobile phone and smartphone users are under contract. Is one way to sell more by buying out the contract or increasing capital in the economy for individuals to buy more?

This is a sweet deal. We had the $100 new every two credit plus buying Pre's online (no mail-in rebate needed) Two Pre's to replace our Centros for $50 bucks TOTAL.

Very sweet.
