Maybe I'm Missing Something?

If the "SoundsGood" can run solo on a single battery, why bother plugging it into my Visor? Looks like it's larger than other MP3 players on the market (I just saw one the size of a lipstick tube!), and pricier (the lipstick-sized one was $200 something, but there were others only slightly less tiny ones for $99), too. Other than loading up music via the Visor (USB cradle only), what's the Visor doing but providing a carrying case for this "SoundsGood"?

Yes, you are...

Did the “lipstick-sized one” also function as a PDA? Your comparisons are poorly thought out and you have missed the point entirely. This product *adds* functionality to the Visor and, as a result, users have less gadgets to carry around (which is my current endeavor). Cool product. Would be even better with removable media. : )

I don't get the fact that it's $269! There are 64mb units *with* removeable media added for less than $150. Sure, it's nice to have the "added" feature to the Visor, but why so much? Add some flash-ram to it or a removeable media slot that *might* be able to double as flash-ram, and then your price seems a little more reasonable.

MP3 players are hot right now and we can expect to see a bunch of them coming out before Christmas. Before you buy, there are a few things I'd suggest you look at: How easy is it to transfer files from your PC to the player, how much memory does the player have, and what's its battery life? The lipstick-sized player for $99 sounds intriguing but not if it can only hold 4 songs and run for an hour.

Maybe the goal is to add functionality to a PDA-but
to be honest this is an mp3 player that happens to plug into a visor. I mean it doesnt seem to need visor for anything other then to give a cool value add.
I dont want to have to carry 2 gadgets around (even if they plug into one another)-I might as well carry my visor as well as my rio. I think they miss the point-how bout a mp3 player-that cost like 100.00 and is small and uses the visor to make up for its size and
price???

One possible advantage is that you can create a fancier or more useful interface
for your MP3 that runs as a PalmOS application than would be available to if the
SoundsGood runs as a standalone MP3 player. The module itself only seems to have
the standard play, pause, stop, etc. buttons and a volume wheel. So if you run it on
its own with the EnergyClip battery thingie, you would have a tiny MP3 player with no
LCD or any other controls. If you run it off the Visor, you might have a fancier interface
with a playlist, graphic equalizer, skins, and a bunch or other MP3-related crap. Plus,
you only have one device to lose and only one set of batteries to buy instead of two
while it's sitting in the Springboard slot.

Overall, I think that a tiny, inexpensive standalone MP3 is a better bet than expensive
MP3 Springboards but if the price of these Springboards came down a bit I might
change my mind.

This device sounds retarded. The whole point to PDAs is to do a small number of tasks really well. As has been pointed out by others in this thread, the price is high and the functionality questionable. Let's see - do I want to bring my Visor to the club and sweat on it for an hour while exercising? Nope. Do I want to attach my Visor to my jogging or biking outfit. Nope. The Visor is great - and so are a bunch of lower cost MP3 players. This sounds like adding an MP3 player to my toaster or microwave. I'll keep them separate, thank you.

What if they made a MP3 Springboard module that actually took advantage of the Visor? I'd suggest one that could both download and play MP3s. What would you think of that?

MiniJam

gadgetguru @ 9/8/2000 7:27:22 PM #
The MiniJam from Innogear does
the same, plus adds 2 mmc slots,
can be used for app storage (in the base 64Meg), adds silent alarm alerts, and is the same price
including shipping.
