Design Your Own ROM with EditROM

EditROM allows you to modify any Palm OS ROM Image (i.e. delete stuff you don't need to free up more room for FlashPro, permanently add your 'mission critical' programs.) Once designed, you simply flash your new ROM over.

This application is a beta and using it violates your warranty. Use at your own risk.

EditROM is in beta but apparently all progress on releasing a final version has stopped. Several e-mails to the author, Lars Kral, to find out what was going on with the public release received no response.

I don't know whether increasing public awareness is a good thing or a bad thing at this point...all I know is that it's been a stalemate for what seems to be an eternity. -PalmVGuy

Before EditROM, only TRG's Imagepro could do this, but Imagepro is only for corp, not common customer...
I have want to delete useless progress and replace with my own for a long long time, now it's here...

THIS IS A WAREZ DISTRIBUTION

ardiri @ 11/4/2000 5:24:31 PM #
i am a beta tester of EditRom, and the latest version is NOT 0.94 - it has come a lot further than that. the version distributed here is a warez (ie: illegal) version of the software. the latest version of the software is 0.97beta - and is not available to the private. version 0.94 has a lot of small errors, but - you can find out yourself.

Don't Listen to Ardiri - v.94 Works Perfectly...
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/5/2000 5:01:18 PM #
I have been using EditROM for a long time now - without a hitch. The ONLY *real* advantage v.97 has over v.94 is that it will accept PDB files - however, this doesn't matter to me, as I'd never put a PDB in ROM anyways...

Get it and enjoy...

Why We Ran this Article

Ed @ 11/5/2000 8:36:31 AM #
I was aware that we were running the risk of making the developer, Lars Kral, angry by publishing this link without permission. What I was trying to accomplish by running PalmVGuy's article was show Mr. Kral that there is a tremendous amount of interest in EditROM in hopes of convincing him to finish working on it and release it to the public. With the last new beta version over 3 months ago, it looked to us that there was a danger of this becoming a dead project.

As PalmVGuy said in the article, he tried several times to get in touch with Mr. Kral, without success. We took this as further evidence that the project might have been stopped.

I'm aware that ethically we're on kind of shaky ground here but I believe my motives are good. But I can always withdraw this article if enough people disapprove of it. Write in and let me know whether you think we did the right thing by publishing it.

the program works (i have a later version "legally" - as a beta tester), and, it does what it is supposed to. however, have you cared to think that Palm themselves may not approve of such an application? last i heard from Lars, was that this was a serious issue - and that probably explains why there has been no progress made on the application.

i suggest, you wait until the final version is released (if ever) before publishing a story - regardless of how many people want this application.

I find this comment to be quite interesting in light of the recent Trojan you released upon the Palm community...

Thank you for running the article. It's nice to know that someone is working on such a useful project. I for one will be happy to pay a (reasonable) price for something like this once it's released, and I don't see why Palm would have a problem with it, as long as people aren't using it to modify the OS code itself.

PalmOS Upgrade Utility

Nomad @ 11/6/2000 3:10:57 PM #
In the readme for editROM, it says I can use the PalmOS Upgrade Utility to apply my custiom ROM to my device. Does anyone know where I can get this?
RE: PalmOS Upgrade Utility
Lucky Dragon @ 11/6/2000 3:43:27 PM #
That's included on the CD-ROM that ships with your Palm (if you have one of the models w/ Flash ROM, that is.)

RE: PalmOS Upgrade Utility
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/7/2000 7:23:23 PM #
I have a IIIxe with Flash ram, and the CD with Palm Desktop, Avantgo and PocketMirror, but there's no sign of an upgrade utility! Any help?

RE: PalmOS Upgrade Utility
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/1/2001 2:26:01 PM #
Try getting the 3.3 os upgrade utility from palm.com That will have the program. apply the palm desptop upgrade and don't add the palm os upgrade. that will get you all you need.

Hey, romeo reflashed the entire device. Scary, and harder to do than on-the-fly modding.

I want editrom. Anybody?
