Sun to Release Java 2 for Palm

Posted By: Ed on Wednesday, December 13, 2000 10:17:19 AM

Sun announced yesterday that they will ship a developer release of Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) and the Mobile Information Device (MID) for the Palm OS. J2ME lets Palms run Java apps. It can distribute functions between client and server, and is specially written to run well on devices with limited memory and processing power, like the Palm. MID runs on top of J2ME, adding the ability to download new apps and services to the device across a network, access these apps when disconnected, and provide standard APIs for cross manufacturer compatibility. No release dates were given.

In addition, Sun and Palm, Inc. will collaborate with other industry experts through the Java Community Process (JCP) program to define a programming interface specification targeted for PDAs.

"Java technology's the best possible platform that anyone can be developing on. I've been looking at a lot of different middleware models, and Java technology is the most robust. For future updates it provides the most manageability, scalability, and interoperability,'' said Francesca Mabarak, a senior analyst in the Yankee Group's Wireless Mobile Technologies division.
