Handspring Readies VisorPhone for Europe

Handspring will introduce the VisorPhone to the European market at 3GSM World Congress this week. They are now making it available to carriers for testing and expect to begin selling the product in Europe this summer.

VisorPhone is a 900/1900 MHz GSM world phone with Address Book dialing, enhanced caller ID, conference calling and more. It also offers full data services, allowing e-mail and SMS. Handspring also intends to provide its own Web browser, Blazer, developed by recently acquired Bluelark Systems.

Joe Sipher, Handspring's vice president of product marketing said, "We believe the handheld computer is the most compelling interface for mobile voice and data applications. When we look back on the handheld industry years from now, we'll see it clearly divided into two periods of evolution: before and after wireless. The handheld industry is just now beginning to cross that divide."

How about CDMA for us people that live in the USA but do not have a GSM carrier.

Just wait, wait, ... and wait.

It's coming! Infact, I saw an article in a recent magazine that showed a VisorPhone exact replicate that was CMDA based. The company, http://www.airprime.com is the OEM. Check out their shockwave version and you'll clearly see a springboard plugged into a Visor. This is their CMDA solution that has (I don't believe) been released yet.

Perhaps that's what the "wait, wait, ... and wait" statement was referring too?

CMDA Version coming soon...

This article indicates that AirPrime has licensed the Plastics and software from handspring to create a CMDA version of the VisorPhone. Although, not presently available (as far as I've read) and may be as late as mid-year.

VisorPhone is pretty darn awsome! I recommend the VisorPhone with the following apps for the hard-core Palm User: PalmScape (Browse the Web in Color), MultiMailPro(E-mail), AvantGo(Full off-line browsing-Slow on-line), PalmVNC(Control your Home PC wirelessly), ICQ(Need I say more), StockManager(Keep track of your stocks wirelessly). All tested and work great on a HS Prism with VisorPhone. You can download all of the above from http://www.palmgear.com.

If you are a Palm VII/x user and want to move up to wireless telephony and internet connectivity (not restricted to per K charges) then the VisorPhone may appeal to you. You can also purchase and install the Palm Internet Connect Kit to allow you to use PQA's, etc. using the VisorPhone (This works great and is faster than my Palm VIIx).

Perhaps, one of these days, I'll write an article on how to do all this stuff to help new VisorPhone users out.

BR,

Jon W.
