Wirelessly Convert MS Office Files to Quickoffice
Cutting Edge Software and Equinox Solutions are introducing a service that allows Microsoft Office documents to be converted to Quickoffice format and vice versa by e-mail. It is free for Quickoffice owners. The two companies are also rolling out services and software to allow companies to perform this service for themselves and even access files directly on the corporate network.
In its simplest form, individual users can convert documents between MS Office and Quickoffice formats by "bouncing" them off the qsconvert@equin.com e-mail address, with a reply message containing the converted document being immediately returned to the user. This can be done with any wired or wireless e-mail service that supports attachments.
"Level two services allow corporations to install a server behind the firewall," said Jeff Musa, president and CEO of Cutting Edge Software Inc. It lets the corporate e-mail server perform the same conversion service as the free one but is intended for companies who are nervous about mailing confidential documents to an unknown company.
The third level allows Palm users to browse directly in the corporate network. When a Word or Excel file is downloaded, it is automatically converted to Quickword or Quicksheet format, then reconverted when uploaded again to the network.
"We have worked diligently to incorporate a host of enterprise-class features into our Quickoffice suite," said Mr. Musa. "By enabling our customers to automatically convert their Excel and Word documents through the ActiveNet pipeline, they will be able to better access their data wherever they are and whenever they need it. As always, our aim is to further increase the productivity of mobile workers throughout the world."
