Palm Vx Reduced to $350

Possibly to fill in the large price gap between the $200 m105 and the $400 m500, Palm is not going to discontinue the Vx. Instead, its price has been reduced from $400 to $350. This is effective today.

Until now, it was considered likely that Palm would discontinue the V series, which is almost as expensive as the m500 but offers a slower processor and less expandability. However, a spokesperson for Palm said his company does not plan to stop manufacturing the Palm V any time soon.

According to the spokesperson, many corporate customers will need time to approve the new models.

Palm is not making a big deal out of this. The announcement came as a one paragraph note in the press release on the m500 series.

Making our used Palm Vx's worth less!

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/19/2001 2:02:17 PM #
Hooray! They just made our used Palm Vx's that we are going to replace worth a lot less! A person would be an idiot to pay more than $200 for my used Palm Vx, now. Thanks Palm!

What would you have preferred, for them to discontinue the Palm Vx? or maybe to not have released an upgrade? Or to go out of business by offering the Palm Vx and the M500 at the same price?

One word: Decafe.

Well, new products always come out to replace the old one, just like cars. Palm V already out for
2 years, so it's time for a new product to come out
and replace it(since other company has new feature
with their palm) You know what, i just bought a
Sony Clie to replace my palm iiie 3 months ago, and
a new Clie will come out next month.....So i think
you're better than me because they didn't replace the
Palm V within the last 2+ year..

It's going to take more than $50

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/19/2001 2:15:21 PM #
It's going to take more than a $50 margin to keep me interested in the Vx. If I can get more flexibility with SD and a universal (at least for the future) connector, I'd much rather invest the extra $50 and step up. I don't value the Vx at over $300 any more if that.

$350 is just Palm's mfg price. Retail/internet shops should price these lower to increase demand.

Really. The Vx should be $300 at most. The price gap of $200 to $350 is still huge!

Palming away.....

I agree on both points; $300 would be a great price for the Vx at this point, and $350 is just a tad too high, especially given that an extra $50 gets you an SD slot and faster processor and the option to use future peripherals.

There is still a large price gap in the lineup, and I wonder how that will play out. There really ought to be something around $250, but the only thing Palm has is the m105 at $200, and that's really seen as a beginners PDA, even with the 8 megs, because of the shape and the small screen. What happened to the rumors of the m300 line? When Palm talks about all future handhelds having the same connector, do they just mean that the m100 is going to have it soon, or are they hinting that there is something else on the way? Certainly there is going to be a replacement for the VII, but that will be expensive too. There needs to be something powerful and expandable at $250-$300, and my guess is that the m300 line can't be too far away.

Value of old palms

"Now only an idiot would pay more than $200 for my used Palm Vx." I've got news for you: the depreciation of your Palm has NOTHING to do with Palm's reduction of the Vx price. It's used, people! Used items lose their value--that's a fundamental principle of economics. If you want your Vx to gain value, keep it until it's an antique and you can sell to a collector. Otherwise, stop complaining!

I have an original Vx - before they actually put the x on the front! I think that's got to be a collectors item by now, right?

Deep upgrade expected

Batiscafo @ 3/22/2001 10:03:36 AM #
I am happy with my Vx. Despite I love color, expansion slot, secure digital, multimedia card I do not think the new m500 or m505 will be a big deal. It is not enough to rush for it. I think I will wait for a really deep upgrade. Maybe next Palm generation. What do you think ?
