Posted By: Ed on Monday, April 02, 2001 9:44:44 AM

The NxDrive-CF is the first certified Type I Compact Flash adapter Springboard module. Unlike other currently available CF Springboards, the NxDrive-CF is plug-and-play. It supports encryption/decryption, compression/decompression, all of the FAT attributes and even long filenames. It will cost $49, come in Ice or Graphite, and be available this month.

With flash upgrade ability built into the module, users can take advantage of new features and upgrades the company releases.

It comes with three application. NxBackup can backup or restore Visor data. NxMover lets users move files from the Visor to a CF card. NxUtil is a utility for basic CF Memory card and file management.

The NxDrive-CF is designed specifically for the Handspring Visor including Visor Solo, Visor, Visor Deluxe, Visor Platinum, Visor Edge, and Visor Prism.

 Running Applications...?
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/2/2001 1:42:41 PM #

Can you run applications/data from the CF cards?

RE: Running Applications...? - at thepresent no

if the software is the "standard" kopsis one, no, you have to move it to the internal memory first.
Afaik they're developing a clie-like "automover" function however

I don't think this is a repackaged version of the Kopsis FAFileMover application but I suppose it might be. In any case, the complete description of the Nxist software description page says nothing about running apps directly from a CF card:

Here is what I got from support on this. The good news is that this is upgradable...

Greeting and thank you for your kind interest.
To answer your question direcly, the Autorun feature
is NOT support in this initial release therefore you
must move the file/date into Visor before launching
them. Sorry about this.

The NxDrive-CF is now in production and will available
within this month.

This CF-Reader (as opposed to the other ones) is a fully-functional springboard module with FlashROM of its own.
This is great since it means you do not have to install the Driver and Filemover app separatley.

Just insert the module, and you get access to the filemover on the card. Insert a CF-card, and you can move files.

The most great thing about this is the backup program included.
If you crash your Visor and loose everything, just insert the module and the CF with the backup, then run the backup software!
The other CF-solutions needed hotsyncing (or beaming) of the backup/mover app first.

Also, since it is all on internal FlashROM, it is upgradeable when new versions are released. And also, in theory, it would be possible to store your own apps in that flash, if there is enough space.

I see no problems in building an AutoCF system, like the one in the TRGpro, and store it on the modules FlashROM!

Also, this CFreader has support for HotSwap of the CF-cards, without removing the module first!

I belive it is a really nive module, and a much better choice than any of the other ones, or the "hack yourself" sollutions.
