Handspring Offers Developer Discounts

Posted By: Ed on Wednesday, June 06, 2001 7:06:00 AM

Handspring has torn a page from Palm's book and is offering discounts on its handhelds to registered developers. They can get 15% off the retail price of the Prism, Edge, and Platinum. This offer is good only for U.S. developers who were e-mailed a special code.

After the discounts, developers can get the Prism for $381.65, the Platinum for $254.15, or the Edge for $339.15. Oddly, this works out to be more than what people on the street pay for the Platinum after the $50 rebate. These prices are good only until June 30.

Near the end of last month, Palm announced that its registered developers could buy many of its handhelds at reduced prices. For them, the m100 is now $84 and the m105 is $130. The IIIc is just $178 and the Vx just $179. The wireless VIIx is only $119.

Palm finds it self with millions of dollars in excess inventory and is trying to get rid of some of it. Handspring is in a bidding war with Palm.

Hah, what whimpy discounts. May as well buy one on the street instead of going through the hassle of signing up for their developer's program. At least Palm gives developers decent hardware discounts.

As usual for US people only. Handspring as well as Palm, I live(/develop) in Europe and I am getting solidly pissed off.
Anyway, the new SONY gadget looks more interesting to develop for, but when will that come to Europe, not to speak of developers discounts?

hmmmm...
I don't agree. I live in the Netherlands and I got that email from Palm, offering discounts to developers too. The PalmOS website specificaly states that these discounts are valid in quite a few other European Countries too...
