Large Companies Standardize on the Palm OS
A new, independent survey of Fortune 1000 companies indicates that a majority of the respondents selected the Palm OS as a handheld platform of choice for their standards lists.
The survey, conducted by the Winn Technology Group, found that 57% of the 585 companies who responded and who have a handheld standard have chosen Palm Powered devices as their exclusive handheld computer.
Within the group of responding companies, the research firm found the following:
- 56% of the respondents have established standards for enterprise-wide handheld computing solutions.
- 85% of the respondents with a handheld standard have placed the Palm OS platform on their standards list;
- 70% of the respondents with a handheld standard selected Palm branded devices as their corporate standard.
"The survey indicates a strong preference for Palm OS based solutions,'' said Jim Hannagan, vice president of research for Winn Technology. "Palm is already known for winning the hearts of mobile professionals; now it seems that Palm OS based solutions are gaining acceptance within corporate IT departments."
"This research demonstrates Palm's focus and capabilities within the enterprise,'' said Jerry Jalaba, vice president of enterprise for Palm, Inc. "Our goal is to win the broad endorsement of IT departments, as we have with mobile professionals. We're doing this by helping companies implement secure and cost-effective mobile solutions for their employees, customers and suppliers with an ROI measured in weeks -- a winning combination.''
Palm's drive into the Enterprise recently suffered a setback when their plan to buy Extended Systems fell through. Extended Systems produces software and systems to hook mobile workers into corporate networks.

"Meanwhile, momentum is building for devices such as the iPaq that use Pocket PC. Late last month, Microsoft announced that in the first year of availability, 1.25 million devices that use Pocket PC shipped. Selling to large businesses is the main reason for the high volume of shipments, analysts say. Corporations tend to buy in large volumes, whereas Palm and Handspring focus on single-device sales to individual consumers."
From this, it sounds like more corporations are using the PocketPC.

In my company...
We don't have a standard PDA, but if we did it would certainly be Palm.
If we made it PPC, then there would be a revolt!

palm vs ce
We tested an ipaq ce device and it worked perfectly except the link to GroupWise email.
With the palm, I have to install Intellisync for calendar, MultiMail for attachments, and Documents to go to view word & excel files. If I have trouble, I get four different companies pointing fingers at each other. I think palm better get these vendors together or they will loose market share to CE before they know what happened.

Great, but true?
is right. But AFAIK PocketPC is winning the corporate market. The survey talks about companies that have standarized its handheld platform, maybe there are many others that have not standarized but use iPaqs.
