Week in Review: Sept: 30 - Oct. 6

Certainly the top story for the week was the release of the Samsung I300 smartphone, albeit on a limited basis. The second most important one was probably the announcement that Matsushita will soon make 256 MB and 512 MB SD cards available.

It was a good week for people who want to use Word and Excel files on their handhelds. New this week is iambic Office, while Quickoffice was updated. Docs to Go will be included free with all Visors for a time.

This was also a good week for anyone looking for a good deal on a Palm powered handheld. There were price drops on the Visor Prism, HandEra 330 and the Palm m105 and m100.

Handera Rules.

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/7/2001 3:46:40 PM #
**** everyone who does not like the Handera. Sony and Palm Sux. Handera is going to purchase the OS from Palm and it won't license it to Sony or Palm themselves.

very mature... if you hate the site so much, why visit it?

I hope the second comment was sarcasm. Handera rules. Handspring rules. Sony rules. And, as unpopular as it might be to say, Palm still rules. I like competition. It'll keep the PalmOS alive.

Is it just me or is this site turning into a ghetto-like ghetto with gangs and stuff?

Question for the guy with the problem with the other devices.

Have you ever owned, let alone used, Palms that you mentioned to be of poor nature? If no, go to a store and try one out and if they, still, are not of suitable nature to, please do go on insulting the rest of the Palm OS device family even though they are much alike with your HandEra 330. If you have used them, please state the reason why they are not of appropriate nature to you. I, too, may have said statements like that in the past after purchasing a Palm with no research. I almost bought an m100 (shudder) just based on its form, and, unfortunatly, bought a IIIxe, when the m105 was just 2 months away. Now, I await the arival of the m125 in Canada as it seems to be the most suitable device for me in my price range. Yes, you may reccomend me a HandEra, but I don't need a high-res screen to take notes down at school because I am just a simple 9th grader. The reason being that different Palm OS devices are made for different people. For example, a doctor may purchase an m505 because of its slim form factor, mettalic finish, and the color capabilities for reference pictures. A regular ninth grader (like me) may purchase a Palm m125 due to its expansion compabilities, interchangable faceplates, cheapness, the fast proccessor and the Memopad app. A Palm geek (also like me) may purchase a Sony Clie PEG-N760 due to high-fidelity sound, seperate graphics controller and image quality comparible with the iPaq (hell, why not get the iPaq?) As I said in the beginning, Palm OS has something for everyone.

Thanks,

Without Jeff Hawkins, you wouldn't have a HandEra at your hand.

Personally I like the whole idea of Palm wars between the different flavors. Hey Ed... can you give us all an online game so we can pummel each other to death and final put an end to who is most superior?

The beauty of each device is in the eye of the beholder.

I prefer a ZX81. The users on it had more of a clue than the people found here.

You're wrong, dammit! With 128k of memory, the ZX Spectrum was better. I haven't ran it in about a year. I have a PAL/MESECAM version (i don't know). I still love it. Now, all I need is a sharp RGB monitor to run it here...in North America...

There's a singular immature person that has nothing better to do than attack/flame HandEra every other day or so in the various Palm forums. This looks like his latest childish folly. We probably ought to just ignore him.

Handera sucks!

1) Uses Serial Sync (I haven't used a serial cable in about 9 years!)
2) Only 240x320 resolution (compared to Sony's 320x320)
3) Takes 4 AAA batteries (compared to Palm's 2 AAA's)
4) Only has 2 memory expansion formats (compared to Handspring's 5 or so)
5) Has "virtual" graffiti (compared to every other company's REAL graffiti)

I think Palm should ban HandEra from making any more crappy devices. We should all sign a petition for HandEra to move to PocketPC so Microsoft goes bankrupt.

Oops! The original "second post" that I referred to has been removed. My apologies to the anonymous one "very mature... ", for I did not mean you. I wish people would at least post their names in these forums.

Anyhow, the guy claimed the Handera would crush all other Palms, and then made a few other comments that don't need repeating. Glad to see the moderator at work.

What is a ZX81?

Without John Sculley and the Apple Newton, Jeff Hawkins wouldn't have had the imagination to make a cheap, pale imitation of a Newton.

ZX 81; ZX Spectrum
palm_pilot_guy @ 10/8/2001 8:27:37 AM #
The Sinclair ZX 81 was one of the most popular computers in the late '70/early '80. It was the size of a thick keyboard. (I am not sure about the size of the ZX81 so I'm just saying the size of ZX Spectrum, the computer that came after that). You would load games of audio tapes and it would sound like an internet connection over the phone. You could also assemble stuff in BASIC, which was pretty ease. (I programmed on it since I was 3, it that easy). But I own a european version of a ZX Spectrum, which considerably smaller than the US. The best thing about it, you could get the same processing power in a Palm Pilot 1000 (or whatever came first). Now, Palms are about a hundred times faster and more powerful.

>> Handera sucks!

>>1) Uses Serial Sync (I haven't used a serial cable in about 9 years!)

Good for you. Being a Palm (III & IIIx) user for 4 years now... it may be nice to be able to re-use my old devices.

>> 2) Only 240x320 resolution (compared to Sony's 320x320)

Lets wait and see what the future holds before bashing the alternatives. Read about the details of the API first (see other threads on this topic).

>> 3) Takes 4 AAA batteries (compared to Palm's 2 AAA's)

More power = longer life. Enough said.

>> 4) Only has 2 memory expansion formats (compared to Handspring's 5 or so)

CF & SD/MMC - native support in the HandEra (no extras to buy in order to access). How much did you spend on "extras" to access those 5 (or so) formats? Hmm? They are also more "standard" than the HandSpring slot (available on multiple manufacturer's devices - HandEra, Palm, etc.).

>> 5) Has "virtual" graffiti (compared to every other company's REAL graffiti)

And what is so bad about this?

If you're going to bash, then do so with some real facts. I too like alternatives and hope all the main players keep producing options and devices that are different.

HandEra can help the Palm OS.
ImpReza @ 10/8/2001 5:08:01 PM #
I do not in any way, dislike the HandEra. But my reservations towards them are that the possibility of some games not being able to work with the new resolution (which would pretty much make buying one useless), also everybody knows that the HandEra is gonna get outsold at least 5 to 1 by Palm and Sony because of the lack of marketing and the lack of an established customer base. But i am all for change, and I hope handera inspires palm to make some necessary changes to its lineup as well.

That's because no one on this board is sarcastic. Everyone here makes only serious, well-thought out comments.

How is the cellular coverage area for Sprint PCS?

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/8/2001 6:46:04 PM #
The coverage area on their web site looks like it succkks! I'm with AT&T now and I'm pretty happy. This Sprint map looks very spotty. Are you Sprintsters happy with your service? Where are you located??? THANKS.

RE: How is the cellular coverage area for Sprint PCS?
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/8/2001 7:53:00 PM #
Sprint's coverage is good in Atlanta and spotty in Philadelphia, PA (My friends with Verzion & AT&T service have the same problems in Philly).

If you are outside of a major metro area bet on roaming as Sprint coverage in these areas is poor.

Xerox-Palm case sent to lower court

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/8/2001 6:53:00 PM #
Hmmmnn. And you say MSFT steals other companies ideas???

A federal appeals court has overturned a lower court's dismissal of a patent infringement suit brought by Xerox against Palm, Xerox said Monday.

The suit focuses on patented handwriting-recognition technology, which Xerox claims Palm violates in its handheld computers.
