Handspring and Visto Corporation, a leading provider of enterprise mobility software, have announced they they will be working together to create a wireless email solution for Handspring's new Treo smartphones. Expected in Spring 2002, it will provide Treo users with automatic delivery and remote management of corporate desktop email, such as that from Microsoft Exchange and Internet-based POP3 email. They intend that the Handspring mail solution will offer tight integration with the desktop email inbox, so any changes to the inbox on the device (e.g., deletions) will be wirelessly synchronized with the corporate desktop email system, in a secure and easy-to-manage manner. When available, software for the wireless email solution will be available for download and self-installation by Treo owners. Related Information:

How does this approach compare to how the RIMM devices work for e-mail? This at a high level sounds like remote control of desktop to forward mail. Seems like having the desktop active is not always reasonable for corperate e-mail where the master is on the server. The desktop might actually be a "laptop" and not available all of the time. - comments?
