Palm Checkup is an application and service that can detect and solve problems with the Palm Desktop application. It can also alert users to new software updates and automatically install them. It works only with Palm-branded handhelds that are HotSycing with a Windows PC. This is a free service from Palm itself. This is clearly an attempt by Palm to allow users to diagnose and fix many of their HotSync problems without resorting to calling it for technical support. It requires a computer running Windows 2000, XP, NT 4.0, ME, 98, or 95 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater. The computer also needs Microsoft JVM Version 3802 and an Internet connection. I'm going on Palm's word that this works with only Palm-branded handhelds. It seems to me this should work for anyone using Palm's version of the Palm Desktop, as opposed to, say, Handspring's. Anyone tried it with a non-Palm-branded handheld? -Ed Related Information:

Very unclear and dubious announcement from Palm. How can you have problems on the Desktop, other than double entries sometimes? Who is using the Palm Desktop anyhow for serious work? I've using Outlook from day one with my V (two years now). RE: What KIND of Problems???????I.M. Anonymous @ 11/16/2001 12:01:36 PM #
There are a lot of times where the computer doesn't recognize that port or something like that. A lot of people have to call tech support because that one error shows up that says that it doesn't recognize the port. RE: What KIND of Problems???????I.M. Anonymous @ 11/17/2001 2:29:15 AM #
There are also times when the Palm Desktop databases get corrupted. Not sure if this app can fix those, but it would be great if it could!
I always use Palm Desktop - have never even tried to sync to Outlook, because frankly Outlook sucks and I only use it because we have to at work... Outlook causes enough problems on my PC without messing up my Palm as well. Maybe MicroSloth needs a Outlook Checker app?!?

Won't install on my PC - stops during the setup with the 'Severe' error 'Unable to find temp directory'. Oh well - just as well I don't have any problems .... at least I don't think I do.... RE: Doesn't work for meI.M. Anonymous @ 11/16/2001 6:47:10 PM #
Make sure you have the TEMP environment varible set to an existing directory. RE: Doesn't work for meI.M. Anonymous @ 11/19/2001 7:19:52 AM #
Any ideas how I set the "TEMP environment varible" in WIN98SE?

Damn Palm.com! Everything was working fine until I used this damn new check-up software. Caused me to do a Hard reset after the Handheld process. RE: Ouch!! Hard Reset on M505
Are you sure that the checkup software caused this? I have an m505 and I installed the checkup software on my Win2K pc yesterday. I thought there was a prc file to be installed on the Palm as well but I cannot find it either on my Palm or my pc. I can't speak to the veracity of the software- it keepd saying that it cannot read the hotsync log file and to delete it, but this seems to be some circular error. Anyway, my m505 is working fine even after installing this application. RE: Ouch!! Hard Reset on M505I.M. Anonymous @ 11/16/2001 4:24:54 PM #
Skipwire.com's Downstream was causing the problem. If you have downstream, then delete it. RE: Ouch!! Hard Reset on M505I.M. Anonymous @ 11/16/2001 4:26:42 PM #
I encountered the same problem with the log file you mentioned. I used the program to report this back to Palm but have not heard from them yet.
I have a Visor and it seemed to insatll fine (yep, it even installed itself into Handspring's defult folder) but it's now telling me that my Hotsnyc is not running (when it actually is). I have the latest version of Palmdesketop offered by Handspring and I'm running Windows 2000. RE: Handspring Visor NeoI.M. Anonymous @ 11/17/2001 2:32:53 AM #
You can't say they didn't warn you... :-P

I installed Palm Check-up even though everything was working just fine. I ran the utility that checks for updates, and it installed Hotsync Manager 3.5.2 OVER 4.01. Just what I wanted, a downdate!

I had a problem preforming a sync with my email program and Checkup pointed the problem out. I then sent a request to a Palm agent using the tool and they helped me fix the problem. A must install!!!

Why overcomplicate the simplicity?
