Remotely Control a PC with a Palm with Win-Hand

Win-Hand is application that allows users to remotely control a PC from a handheld over the Internet. An image of the display from the remote computer is highly compressed and transferred to the handheld. On-screen keyboards allow for easy text entry and for entering key combinations, like Ctrl-Alt-Del. The developer claims Win-Hand is significantly faster than PalmVNC. A free demo is available now and the final version will be available December 3. Pricing has not yet been set.

Win-Hand works over almost any type of modem where a TCP/IP connection is made. Unfortunately, this requirement excludes the Palm VII series. However, most other wireless modems work fine and the application can also be run through the cradle with Mocha PPP.

The application requires a new password for each session for increased security.

It works on PCs running Windows 95, 98, 2000 or NT. No Macintosh client is available.

I have been testing this software for about two weeks.....It seems to work for the most part but I did experience lockups once in a while. I would like to see how the full version runs....

Let me be the first to say this is really great. I've been rather unhappy with PalmVNC and will most definatly buy this baby as soon as my sprintpcs visorphone comes in. This is great in work enviroments too with a wifi module or the ethernet datacradles. Programs like these should be bundled with the wifi modules.

Imagine setting up a mp3/movie server at home in your living room with wifi and using this prog to turn your palm/visor/handera/whatever into a remote. Can't wait for it to come on sale.

Please send me a link to a remote that I can use for the DVD player in my PC. I can output the image to my TV but how do I start, stop, FF, etc from the couch? You shouldn't be so quick to send off a smart-ass reply until you've thought it through.

You could do it like that, which doesn't work with all the software on your pc, and requires that the PC tower be showing. Maybe its me, but if I'm setting up a PC based entertainment system, I'd like it to look good, so I'd hide the PC away somewhere in the back. A system that lets you use wifi can let you control anything on a pc. Use your machine to go browser the web, or use the silkscreen keyboard to irc. A normal remote that is limited to its programming can't compare to a remote administration.

Stuff to control your computer's DVD player, plus you can have your computer in a different room:

http://www.x10.com/products/x10_vk57a.htm

There are other IR remotes you can get for your PC as well to control DVD play.

You should also be able to this with the Pebbles PC project with the components there, say Remote Commander, or the Shortcuts tool. It's network enabled you can take your pick of connectivity options other than straight rs-232. I just find this win-hand app an little unappealing visually, and will continue to use PalmVNC (Handera-ized) via 802.11b.

Does anyone know how to get this to work on the m series?

I tried at work with my 505 and a Clarinet IR, it works perfectly, it should work with a modem wired or wireless too, although I havenīt tried it yet.

Cant get it to work.

Is there anyone out there that would like to help me in setting this program up? Im almost positive I have it configured correctly, I just have a feeling that my ISP wont let me do things like this. BTW I have Cox@Home cable service.

Thanks

Cox@home is VERY restrictive. They close a ton of ports so people cannot do things like host web pages, ftp sites, etc... Maybe if you could Telnet into your broadband modem you could open up these ports. I have Sprint Broadband here in Tucson, and it uses a Cable modem, but they have locked out the telnet ports on it. I am not sure if they do the same thing for your modem.

1. Find out which port TCP/UDP etc... that this software uses.
2. Telnet into your Broadband modem, if possible.
3. find out which filtering commands will allow you to allow/disallow certain traffic.
4. Open up the appropriate ports.
5. Hope that Cox does not catch on, as they will get grumpy.

Just change the port. I have road runner and I run a web server, a telnet server, a SQL server, a mail server, VNC server, etc... All on non standard ports, have for months. The moral is place your server apps on a different port ;)

How clear the screen is?

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/29/2001 8:21:07 PM #
Hi all,

I just want to know how easy is to read the screen sent from the home computer? Is the quality good on a standard Vx screen? Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The sceen really SUX !!! These pictures ARE NOT FROM REAL DEVICES:

http://www.win-hand.com/help/client/index.htm

They are fakes.

I've tested WinHand, it's nice, fast ('cos B&W) and I love usefull mapped icons FIND and CALC.

But it has very smudged fonts which can't be readable even if you will ZOOM IN.

For now VNC still WIN !
