Two Apps to Fix Fonts or Edit ROMs

Many people have said that the high resolution default font on the Sony's Clié is too thin. Hacker Dude-San, creator of several other popular apps, has released Thin Font Fix. It thickens the lines of the default font a bit but the size of each character stays the same. It is freeware.

Brayder Technologies has released a beta of JackSprat 2.0. With it, users can delete unwanted apps from their handheld's ROM. Users can delete almost anything in flash ROM, including the Date Book, Memo Pad, To-Do List, and Address Book. One user got 1.7 MB of free ROM on a N760C, while the stock N760C has 319 KB of free ROM. It installs a hidden stub program which will make sure that the conduit still runs. This allows replacement applications to still use the Palm conduits. Only registered JackSprat owners can request the 2.0 beta. JackSprat costs $8.

Just checked out the review. Nice! This is what *Sony* should have done with their OS4.1 units -- and put in more fonts too!

Doesn't seem to work with Palm Reader though. With this fix installed, Palm Reader reported it could not find any books. I could only read my books again by uninstalling the app.

That's strange. The SPUG review *shows* it working with Palm Reader! Perhaps he was still using the "downgrade" he mentions in the review?

Sorry, I'm guilty of faulty research. I hope you'll cut me some slack on Christmas Eve. Thanks for setting me straight. I've updated the article.

So, will users with measly 2mb ROMs be able to use this too? It would seem so, but I thought it best to ask. I'd personally love to delete the built-in apps I've replaced with other ones, and use the extra ROM for those replacements (well, one or two of them anyway ;-)

I'm just trying to say that this isn't a public beta. You can buy JackSprat now and only get the 2.0 beta if that's all you want. But you can't download the beta as a way of getting the app for free.
